Chapter 5
It had been snowing heavily for days in the city, disrupting the traffic.
As a result, Cornelia decided to put a hold on her food stall business.
But that didn’t stop Winston from seeing her, especially when they were madly in love. Every day after work, he’d walk to her house, using the excuse that he missed the soup made by her.
It took him thirty minutes to get there in the heavy snow and howling wind, though.
Probably because of the harsh weather and long distance, their relationship developed more quickly than I had imagined.
In Cornelia’s place, Winston was sitting by the dining table while she was
cooking for him. Occasionally, they would look each other in the eye with a smile.
What a lovely scene, if only they weren’t a cheating couple.
And how did I know all that?
Well, Edmund secretly installed a camera in Cornelia’s house for
- me.
A few days back, Edmund sent me an invoice, telling me to

refund him.
I asked him what it was about.

And he replied impatiently, “It kills me to report to you what happened between them every day, so I got a camera installed. See for yourself! It’s my dad’s bedroom. I can do whatever I
want to it!”
After a moment of consideration, I agreed to the idea.
Winston was smart, cunning, and meticulous. But whenever he was with Cornelia, he’d get so lovestruck that he couldn’t think straight at all.
Only by knowing more about your enemies could you plan how to strike successfully next.
Besides, he did the exact same thing to me before. So, why couldn’t I?
One day, when Winston was focused on drinking the soup, and Cornelia was staring at him lovingly and resting her chin on her hand, Edmund stormed in.
He frowned and snapped, “So, you’re that boyfriend everyone’s talking about!”
Instantly, their faces went stiff.
Cornelia quickly chimed in and explained gently that Winston was just a customer.

But Edmund didn’t buy it.

With a snort, he went on, “You got to be kidding me, right? It’s freezing out there, and he went all the way here just to have some soup? I thought the neighbors were just making it up, but apparently, they’re not.”
“And why are you so panicked? It’s not like you two can’t go on a date or something. You like her, and she likes you. Then bang! A couple.”
Then, as if something had dawned on him, Edmund gazed at Winston and asked with doubt, “Oh, no. Don’t tell me you’re a scammer.”
Winston’s face darkened as he denied it, “I’m a lawyer.”
“Then you’re married, huh?”
“Just got here for the soup,” Winston uttered, his face more darkened.
This time, Edmund shouted, “Holy crap! You cheated on your wife with my stepmom. Get the fuck outta here! You’re married and you seduced a widow? I’m so kicking your ass!!!”
With that, he threw a punch at Winston, and Cornelia stopped him frantically, screaming out loud.
The door was wide open, and some of their neighbors were already there for the show.

They started gossiping.
“Cornelia, stay alert and don’t get scammed again. You know how sly those scammers could be these days.”
“Remember the guy that often came to you a few years ago? You thought he did it out of charity, but his raging wife said otherwise. Don’t be fooled again.”
Hearing that, Cornelia told them it was just a misunderstanding. Winston was there only for soup, and Edmund got it wrong.
After that incident, Winston, worried about the impact, stopped visiting Cornelia every day. When he did drop by, it was all very hush–hush.
They both started missing each other dearly. Every time they met, they got all lovey–dovey, their eyes always glued to each other.
Meanwhile, I sent Winston a draft of the divorce agreement.
He replied with just three words: “Not gonna happen.”
One day, I saw through the camera that Cornelia told Winston she was leaving the city out of the blue.
Winston was shocked, “Why are you leaving?”
Cornelia’s eyes were welled up with tears.

“Edmund’s grown up now, and it’s not right for us to keep living like this. I don’t have a place of my own here, so I’m going back to my hometown. A neighbor there introduced me to a widower. He’s in his carly fifties, but given my situation, it’s all I can—‘
“No way! A man like that doesn’t deserve you!” Winston burst out angrily, “You can’t marry anyone else; you can only marry
me!”
Cornelia started to cry.
“You’re still a married man. I will never be the other woman who breaks up a family. Mr. Lizzie, let’s just consider us star–crossed…”
Winston said in a low voice, “Cornelia, just wait a bit longer. I won’t let you be the other woman. I’m definitely getting a divorce, but you don’t understand; to get the best outcome, I can’t rush.”
Cornelia suddenly stood up, her voice choked, “Aren’t you a divorce lawyer? How can you not get a divorce? Didn’t you say you make twenty million a year? Why are you still fighting over money?”
“I don’t get all the complicated stuff between you two. All I know is, I don’t want money, I just want true love! Do you really think money is more important? If so, leave! You don’t deserve my love!”
Later on, Winston texted me.

“You can have the house. I’ll take the money and our son.”
I replied, “I want it all.”
“Don’t push it.”
“Then we’ll drag this out.”
The next time Winston appeared on the camera, it was nighttime.
Cornelia had just showered, her hair damp, wearing a slightly sheer new nightgown in the warm room.
She was cold and silent towards Winston but kept bending over to serve him soup.
Winston’s eyes were glued to her. He almost lost control, trying to hold her hand, but she shook it off in shock.
“What do you take me for, Mr. Lizzie? This is the last time I’m making soup for you. I’m going back home for matchmaking next month. Don’t come over again!”
That night, Winston sat silently in the living room for a long time.
He called over.
“You can have the house and the money. I’ll take our son.”
I paused for a moment.

“Let Abbott decide who he wants to be with.”
“Okay, you said it. Don’t go back on your word.”
Winston sounded confident.

I gazed out at the snowy clear sky, feeling my chest tighten a bit.
