- 2.
I felt sick, a wave of nausea washed over me.
Mark panicked, rushed over to my side.
His cologne was gone, replaced by Brittany’s
perfume.
The smell made me gag.
I pushed him away and stumbled towards the
bathroom, pretending to be blind.
My body was already rejecting him
My body was already rejecting him.
I kneeled in front of the toilet, waiting for the
vomit to come, but I saw a pregnancy test in
the trash can.
Two lines.
I didn’t know how to process what I saw.
Since I lost my sight, Mark and I had not been.
intimate, and he had Brittany pregnant.
Mark rushed in, his voice full of fake concern.
“Honey, what’s wrong? Are you sick?”
“I got scared when you pushed me away.”
He held me tight.
One minute he was screwing another woman,
the next he was talking about his undying love
for me.
Mark, you were a good actor.
I pried his hands off me.
“I must have a stomach bug, everything I eat
makes me sick.”
I learned to lie.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry,” Mark said, ignoring the
vomit on my chin and holding me again. “I’ve
been working too hard, not taking care of
you, it’s all my fault.”
He smoothed my hair, his face a mask of
concern, then led me back to the bedroom.

He reached for a new outfit for me, but I
stopped him and dressed myself.
Mark seemed taken aback.
This was the first time I’d dressed myself
since I had lost my sight.
I was lying on the bed.
He carefully pulled the covers over me.
“Are you mad at me for working too hard?”
“Today is your birthday, I’ll spend the whole
day with you, okay?”
He had been on top of the world, but now he
was begging.
Was I lucky or cursed?
I was about to fall asleep when Mark’s phone
rang.
He silenced it, checked to see if I was asleep,
and answered.
“You’re so bad, you ripped my dress, get me
a new one.”
“I’ll be there in a minute.” Mark looked back
at me, kissed me, and left the room.
I squeezed the sheets and finally let myself
cry.
Brittany hadn’t left, she was waiting here in
the house?

I tried to calm down and stay in the marriage
for another week.
