I lost my own baby. But here, I became the mother of over a hundred kids.
That day, a girl was adopted by a couple.
Both were doctors; they were easygoing and gentle, and they truly adored kids.
As usual, I prepared an exquisite meal for the little girl, hugged her, and wished her a happy family, a promising future, and a long, healthy life.
She kissed my cheek. “I’ll miss you, Violet. Bye.
“Will you say bye for me to that man behind you? He’s been there for days already.”
I was stunned. After the car drove away, I turned around slowly.
Darell, in the clothes he had worn the day he confessed his feelings for me, was looking at me with affection in his eyes.
He said, “Violet, during those days you were away, I was always wondering. If those things had never happened, and if our baby had grown up healthy and safe, how beautiful would you have been?
“You’re even more beautiful than I imagined.”
I looked at him icily. “What’s the point of saying this?”
Smiling bitterly, he shook his head, saying, “Violet, I know I’ve made so many horrible mistakes that I don’t deserve to stand here. I have been here for a month now, but I still don’t have the courage to go inside and see
you. All I have done is stand outside the door, and even a glance at you is more than enough for me.
“But I guess all people are greedy. I can’t bear to see you leave me. So, I put on these and want to ask you–even though I know it’s shameless for me to ask you this–if I really know I was wrong and am willing to make it up to you for the rest of my life, can we start over?”
I smiled sarcastically, “Mr. Bourn, I’m obliged to remind you that the drug has just been developed and hasn’t been put into clinical trials yet. Its side. effects are extremely severe. Are you really sure about this?”
He fell silent for a long time, the sadness in his eyes palpable. Then he said self–mockingly, “You’re right. I get your point. I’ll go where I belong and never disturb you again.”
He then took a document from his bag. “Violet, the divorce agreement you drew up wasn’t thorough enough. I made some amendments. It’s not compensation; it’s what you deserve.
“I know you don’t wanna go anywhere near me. I’ll put it on the ground, and you can take it after I leave.
“I’m leaving, Violet. From now on, no matter where I am, I’ll pray for you; I hope you can live a happy life.
“Goodbye, Violet.”
He glanced at me one last time and turned to leave with immense reluctance and affection.
As I watched his retreating figure, I seemed to see the old me who went to the hospital alone and looked outside the window till it was dawn at home. I must have looked the same lonely
But now, instead of me, he was the lonely one.
The next day, I received a big sum of transfers in my bank account. It was listed in the divorce agreement Darell had drawn up.
He didn’t give me any shares or house ownership; it was all cash.
A couple of days later, I knew why.
Darell turned himself in, acknowledging that he paid someone to push me down the stairs and killed our baby.
The Bourn Group’s stocks hit the daily limit down. All kinds of industries under its banner suffered a huge blow, and no one even wanted the real. estate in his name.
People all condemned him, the heartless, crazy jerk who went after his own family.
I didn’t know if he was sentenced to death because he killed himself
before the verdict.
With the money he left me, I established children’s welfare institutions. and relief centers worldwide.
I hoped every kid in this world could grow up safely and live long.
The end.
