Chapter 17 I’m Dead
Alena was wheeled into the emergency room. Standing outside, Kaleb waited for the results anxiously.
His assistant reminded him carefully, “Mr. Harrington, I’ve informed the Brook family, and they’re on their way. Shall we go to the airport now? You might miss the flight if you stay here any longer.”
Lexingham was a town on a remote highland, and there was only one flight from Angoham to Lexingham every day.
The weather in Lexingham hadn’t exactly been great these days, and the flight always got canceled, so his assistant reminded him considerately.
Frowning, Kaleb scolded him angrily, “Are you stupid or what? Savannah is out there in Lexingham enjoying herself. Nothing will happen to her. But Ally’s life is in danger! How could I leave her now?”
Kaleb called his assistant in the wee hours and asked him to buy flowers. and gifts. His assistant figured Kaleb was planning on apologizing to me properly.
Last night, Kaleb acted like I meant more to him than Alena, but today, he changed.
His assistant’s eyes dimmed. Maybe he felt sorry for me.
After all, he witnessed every phase that Kaleb and I had been through. I guessed he wanted us to patch things up.
He lowered his head to hide the disappointment in his eyes. “I’ll go cancel the ticket now, Mr. Harrington.”
Alena happened to be wheeled out when the Brook Family arrived With the results in hand, the doctor sand loudly. “Where’s the patient’s family?
Kaleb strode forward “I’m here. How’s Ally?”
The doctor glanced at his worried face and then said, “She’s stable now How could you be so irresponsible? You knew about her heart condition well, and you still agitated her? Thankfully, she was taken here in time, of she might have gone into sudden cardine arrest at any moment”
“Agitated?” The Brook family looked at Kaleb “She was at the Harrington’s residence yesterday. What happened?”
Kaleb was puzzled, too. “Shelby, don’t worry. I’ll get to the bottom of this Anyway, Ally is fine–that’s what matters.”
In the hospital room, they surrounded Alena’s bed.
They looked at her with distress in their eyes, feeling sorry for her
I couldn’t help but think of the time before I left the Brook family. It was the pandemic lockdown, and Luigi was trapped in his office.
I offered to go and take care of him, but after I got sick, everyone moved out of the villa at once, worried they’d be infected.
From that moment on, I knew the rill between me and my family caused by Alena could never be fixed.
I meant nothing to them.
Every time something happened to Alena, they’d stay by her side nervously Looking at them, I couldn’t help but feel hitter
Just then, the maid who took care of Alona came into the room. Kaleb questioned her sternly, “You’ve been with Ally. What triggered her??”
She replied. “I think it happened when she was checking her phone. I saw a lot of comments all insulting her.”
“Insulting her? Who?”
“I don’t know about that. Her phone has been buzzing since last night; maybe someone leaked her number.”
Kaleb picked up Alena’s phone, turned it on, and figured out the code.
easily.
He clicked on the call log. Sure enough, she had been bombarded with harassing calls from countless unknown numbers all night.
There were also countless messages with all kinds of nasty words.
Mainly, she was accused of being a shameless slut who seduced another. woman’s husband and incited the man to run away from his wedding.
In the next second, another call came through. Kaleb answered, and a middle–aged woman’s voice rang out. “You shameless cunt! How dare you seduce someone else’s husband? You’re gonna die with an STD…”
Everyone in the room was upper class, and they were shocked by such language.
Kaleb turned off the phone without saying a word; he wouldn’t stoop so low as to argue with a shrew.
“My poor girl. Who did this to her? She’s so unlucky…” My mom looked at Alena, who was still unconscious, her heart broken.
Kaleb pulled a long face and said firmly, “I bet it’s Savannah.”
My family and my husband let me take the blame without bothering to verify.
Alena’s years of effort worked, they assumed I was a vicious woman, and whatever I did was wrong.
Just then. Alena’s weak voice rang out. “Don’t blame Savannah, guys. I shouldn’t have made that call it ruined her wedding. She has every right to be angry with me…”
Her face was utterly pale as she cried and said how sorry she was in bed.
This trick never failed: they felt even more sorry for her.
She grabbed Kaleb’s sleeve. “Kaleb, you’re gonna get her back today, right? Go on then. I’ll be fine. When you arrive at Lexingham, could you please tell her I’m sorry? After she comes back, I’ll go abroad. I promise she will never see my face again.”
“How could you go abroad given your condition?”
“Indeed. Ignore Savannah, she can be petty and willful for as long as she wants. You called Kaleb under an emergency, and she left without telling anyone because of that? Now, she’s even more out of line! How outrageous!” My family were all angry at me.
Kaleb changed his mind. “I’m not going to Lexingham. Madam Brook’s birthday is around the corner, she’ll come back before that.”
Looking at the heavy snow outside the window, I thought, “But I cant never make it to Grandma’s birthday.
“Guys, by then, will you realize I never went to Lexingham?
“Will you know I’m dead already?”
