Chapter 20 Marriage Alliance
The snowflakes outside the car window blurred Kaleb’s vision. Not in the mood to enjoy the scenery, he seemed preoccupied.
He seemed to be anticipating something or afraid of something. Several times, he took out his phone, tapped on the screen, and then put his phone
away.
When he arrived home, he looked up and saw the lights inside on. Immediately, he breathed a sigh of relief.
As soon as the car came to a steady stop, he got out eagerly and strode toward the door.
He straightened his coat and then opened the door unhurriedly, looking as cold and indifferent as ever.
As he changed his shoes, he said, “Savannah, I’m so surprised you still remember the way back.
“Do you have any idea what happened these days…”
The lights in the living room were on, but the person waiting for him was Victor, not me.
Kaleb looked up and met Victor’s gaze, and he was a bit stunned. “Dad? What are you doing here?”
“Terrence is in the old manor. I’m here to talk to you about something. What is it? Savannah still hasn’t come back?”
Victor looked at him with a frown. Obviously, my disappearance didn’t
catch anyone’s attention..
That made sense. Kaleb and I were childhood sweethearts. Like other couples, we had a row with each other from time to time, and I was always the one who compromised. In their eyes, it wasn’t a big deal that Kaleb left me at the wedding scene alone.
After I was done throwing a tantrum. I’d come back.
Feeling that telling the truth might make him look bad, Kaleb found an excuse. He said, “Tomorrow is Madam Brook’s birthday. She wouldn’t miss the world for that. I think she’s probably at the Brook’s old mansion
now.”
Victor lit up a cigarette. Amidst the swirling smoke, he said, his voice flat, “Patch things up with her after she comes back. It’s better that you two have a kid soon, which will make Daniel happy. He’s become much saner these days and has got close to that bastard.”
“Terrence always hates Grandpa, right?” Kaleb’s eyes turned wary.
Victor sneered, “Personal feelings are nothing compared to profit. He
came back right after Daniel got better. Why do you think? He came back came back right after Daniel got better.
for the family property. I heard Daniel has been looking for a wife of
matching status for him.”
“What?” Kaleb’s expression changed as he walked over to the couch. quickly. “Anyone Grandpa favors?”
“It’ll be either the heiress of the Morgan family or the Thompson family.”
Both families were as influential as the Harrington family.
Though the Brook family was rich, we were nothing compared to those century–old prestigious families.
Kaleb and I were childhood sweethearts, or he would have been engaged to one of the two heiresses.
Terrence already had a career abroad. If he had a fiancé from a top–notch family, there was no way Kaleb could ever be his match.
Kaleb gritted his teeth. “Terrence has never been acknowledged as part of the family. He doesn’t get to be this lucky!”
Victor glanced at her and said, his voice devoid of any emotion, “If it were ten years ago, indeed, he didn’t get to be so lucky. But… Do you know how much his listed company is valued at?”
“How much?”
“15 billion dollars. And the number has been rising every year.”
Kaleb leaned against the couch heavily. He knew Terrence had been doing well these years, but he had no idea Terrence had been this. successful.
15 billion dollars? That was almost as good as the Harrington Group’s performance.
The Harrington Group ranked second in the domestic real estate industry because of the wealth and connections accumulated by generations of the family.
Terrence started from scratch. In less than twenty years, he managed to be so successful. Given this, it was only a matter of time before he surpassed the Harrington family.
Once Daniel handed over the Harrington family to Terrence, his net worth would skyrocket. Let alone in the country, he’d even be one of the richest people globally.

“This… isn’t happening…” Kaleb muttered. He thought of something and looked very uneasy.
Victor said. “Those stupid things you’ve done lately pissed Daniel off. Besides, he has always felt he owes Terrence. What if he takes this chance and lets Terrence take over the Harrington Group?”
Kaleb immediately said. “No way! Grandpa would never let him take over the entire Harrington family.”
Victor retorted. “Fine. Maybe not. But what if Terrence gets the lion’s share? You’re the family’s legitimate heir. And the illegitimate child gets more than you? How embarrassing will that be?”
Noticing the bitter look on Kaleb’s face, Victor added fuel to the flame.
“Terrence may be more successful than you in business, but you have two advantages. For one thing, you aren’t a cripple. For another, Daniel adores Savannah. If you two can have a baby soon, for her and your baby’s sake. I’m sure he’ll give you the company shares.”
Victor then stood up, saying, “I’m sure you know what to do now. Be nice to Savannah and make a clean break with Alena. Tomorrow is your best chance.”
Kaleb saw him to the door. “Dad, rest assured. I know what to do and won’t make another mistake.”
I sat on the balcony, reaching out to catch the flying snowflakes. As I watched as the snowflakes passed through my palm, I sneered.
I said to Kaleb silently, “Too late to regret now, Kaleb.
“You could never earn forgiveness from a dead person.”
I had already accepted the harsh reality by now. I couldn’t come back to
life, and I couldn’t vanish either. Might as well; I’d just watch and wait till Kaleb met his karma.
After Victor left. Kaleb looked genuinely worried. It seemed Terrence’s return put him under a lot of pressure.
He called me again and again, and the mechanical female voice telling him my phone was switched off made him even more irritated.
In the darkness, I heard his murmur, “Savannah, will you ever cut it out?”
Even now, he still didn’t think he did anything wrong; instead, he blamed me for everything that had happened.
Utterly uneasy, Kaleb stroked the bracelet on his wrist again and again, trying to calm himself down.
The bracelet was the vessel of my soul, and I could feel his stroke.
Every time I saw him having sex with Alena, his touch only sickened me
more.
The next day, Kaleb changed into a dark suit and wore the tie I had given
him.
With a gift for my grandma, he went to the Brook’s old mansion.
His assistant asked, expressing his concern, “Mr. Harrington, is Mrs. Harrington back?”
His heart sank for a second before he replied coldly, “She’s probably back here already. She cares about her grandma the most; now that her grandma is critically ill, of course, she’d go back in advance.”
He presumed that I didn’t contact him because I was still mad at him.
The party would begin in the evening, and there were no other guests when Kaleb arrived.
Alena had been waiting for him at the gate. Upon seeing him, she strode forward from afar. “Finally. Kaleb! I’ve been waiting for you for ages.”
As her gaze fell on his dark suit, she pouted, “Kaleb, not black suit again! You look like an old man. Why didn’t you wear the bespoke suit I gave you last month?”
That suit matched her dress. Obviously, she wanted everyone to think they were an item.
What Victor said last night echoed in Kaleb’s ears, and he took her hands. on his arm away.
“Ally, you’re not a little girl anymore. You should have boundaries. What if the others see you like this? People talk.”
Alena was puzzled. How come Kaleb was suddenly so cold to her? Yesterday, he cared about her so much.
“Kaleb, I’m just…”
“I’ll go say hi to Madam Brook,” he interrupted her and walked away quickly, ignoring her feelings for the first time. Naturally, he didn’t see the cold glint flashing across her eyes.
He walked into the yard quickly and stopped a waiter, asking, “Has Ms. Brook come back?”
The waiter thought he meant Alena and nodded. “She’s been here early in the morning. You didn’t see her?”
Kaleb was thrilled, thinking, “I knew it. No matter what, Savannah wouldn’t miss Madan Brook’s birthday.” With such a thought, he strode
inside.
