Chapter 21 She’s Your Daughter Too
Coming back to the Brook’s old mansion. I calmed down. no longer letting the despicable pair bother me.
I missed Grandma. If I had known that the time I saw her before the wedding would be the last time. I would have stayed with her for more.
It had been almost a month. Was she better?
Kaleb stepped inside after he had Grandma’s permission.
With a kind smile, he said, “Madam Brook, I’m here to visit you.”
He came up with an excuse before he saw her, which was probably because he didn’t want her to overthink anything, “I had something to do. so I’m here a bit let. I asked Vannah to come here first. Are you feeling better?”
No one said anything in response; instead, a glass was aimed at him.
Grandma was bedridden, so she didn’t have much strength and missed. The glass shattered at his feet.
He knew she was upset about him running away from the wedding, so he wasn’t mad. After a brief pause, he continued to walk to her.
I saw Grandma; she looked even more haggard and older.
She wanted to prop herself up, and a maid nearby quickly came over to help..
Kaleb quickened his pace and stepped forward to help, too, complaining

at the same time. “Be careful, Madam Brook. Gee, where is Vannah? She knows exactly about your poor health. Why isn’t she here?”
The second he stepped closer to Grandma, she slapped him hard.
“Who said you could come near me? Seram!!
The smile on Kaleb’s face froze for a second. No matter what, she was his elder, and he said patiently, “Madam Brook, I know I did something wrong. You can slap me as many times as you want.”
“Evelyn, what was that about? Kaleb is here to see you. Why did you slap him?” My mom’s voice rang out before she came in.
Grandma shook off Kaleb’s hand and let the maid help her up and lean against the soft pillow.
Pointing at Kaleb’s nose, she said sternly. “He doesn’t get to be Vannah’s husband! I regret it so much. Back then, his family needed money, and I shouldn’t have listened to Vannah and let her grandpa help them out. Who would have known this brat is actually an ingrate? How could you leave her alone at the wedding scene? How could you?!”
As Grandma said, she burst into tears. I thought my heart was already numb after being hurt by my husband and my family so many times, but at this moment, it suddenly felt something.
I knelt beside the bed, almost pleading with her, “Grandma, don’t be upset. OK? Don’t cry… I’m back…”
Raising my hand, I tried again and again to wipe off the tears from the corner of her eye, but my fingers kept passing through her cheek.
She couldn’t hear me or know how anxious I was.
“Evelyn, you shouldn’t blame Kaleb for that. He did it for Ally’s sake. You
know how weak Ally is, right? It wasn’t a big deal, but Savannah had to make such a big scene.”
Already furious, Grandma was further enraged by my mom’s words.
“Are you even listening to yourself? Kaleb is her fiancé, and he was the one who left her alone there! Instead of blaming him, you wanted Vannah to take the blame? Are you crazy? Ever since Alena came back, we’ve never had a day of peace. I could have endured with it in the past, but at this point, you’re still trying to pin it on Vannah?”
“Calm down, Evelyn. Everyone wants peace, but Savannah just can’t stop making trouble,” my mom said.
“I watched Vannah grow up, and I know her better than any of you. She never bears to hurt an ant. How could she hurt her sister? Besides, what good would it bring her? You’re her mom, but you never trust her and fall for Alena’s tricks again and again,” Grandma fumed.
Just then, Alena came in, crying. “Grandma, I know you and I are never close because I grew up outside the family and couldn’t be there for you. But you shouldn’t have smeared me like this just because you favor Savannah. I’m your granddaughter, too! This is so unfair…”
My grandma was even more pissed off. “You minx! You brought trouble into our family! What did Vannah ever do to you? You even went so far as to ruin her wedding!”
Saying this, Grandma picked up her cane aside and hit Alena’s head with it.
“You vixen, our family ends up like this because of you! Vannah is missing because of you! I’ll make you pay today!”
Due to Grandma’s condition, she was, in fact, very weak.
Even so, Kaleb hugged Alena at once, shielding her with his body
Seeing this, Grandma was seething with rage. “I knew it! You despicable pair! Since you dare to be so intimate in my face, I bet you’ve done something even more outrageous at the Harrington’s old mansion. No wonder Vannah has changed so much!”
I used to be outgoing, but later, I became timid, self–deprecating, and suspicious.
I couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something going on between Alena and Kaleb. Again and again, I tried to convince myself it was all in my head, and I ended up having a mental disorder and relying on taking medications for years just to keep myself sane.
Gradually, I became more and more taciturn. Grandma noticed it and felt sorry for me.
But she was the only one. The others in the family cared about Alena only, and no one gave a toss about me or my feelings.
“Evelyn, that’s a bit uncalled for. The Harrington family raised Ally for years, and she’s like a sister to Kaleb. If others hear you, Ally’s reputation will be ruined,” my mom defended Alena again.
Grandma looked deeply disappointed. “Is that all you care about? Have you ever thought about how Vannah feels? Kaleb is her husband!”
Tears streamed down her wrinkled face as she continued, “I’ve been bedridden, but I’m not stupid. I know what’s been going on around here these few years. Just think about it. Is Vannah really that kind of person?”
Everyone was lost in thoughts after hearing her words, recalling everything that had happened.

Meanwhile, she added. “Vannah hasn’t shown up after she left the wedding that day, right? You still have no idea where she is, and you keep spending time on this vixen! Shelby. Vannah is your daughter, too. What kind of mother are you? How could you not love your daughter?”
A trace of surprise flashed across Kaleb’s face. With Alena in his arms, he asked. “Madam Brook, what did you say? Savannah hasn’t come home
vet?”
My family looked at each other in dismay. They probably all thought I had come back already to check on Grandma.
As for why they hadn’t seen me–they presumed I was in the kitchen, cooking for Grandma. After all, I always cooked whatever pastries she liked.
My mom was dumbfounded. “Savannah isn’t here?”
