- Chapter
1
“Don’t fucking touch me!” Jenny growls as I roughly
drag her into the police precinct. She has her hands
cuffed behind her back. Her hair is out of place.
Her olive tank top is only half tucked into her black
jeans now after the scuffle we had when I finally
found her. Her skin is on the darker side. She has
long, cascading, black hair. It’s put into a pony tail,
and it flows down her back. I’m amazed at how
put–together she still looks after the scuffle we had.
I finally found her.
I don’t say anything, though. Ijust smile softly. I
wish there were more officers in the station today. I feel like this is a triumph. I imagine a row of
applauding officers, whistling and throwing scathing
remarks at the arrested woman.
But it’s just me and Jim. He’s kind of a chunky guy,
seeing as he works primarily in booking, and he has
a decidedly awesome moustache.

Jenny finally stops talking as we approach the desk. I ready myself for the compliment.
I finally found her! The one who ruined everything.
“Don’t you have something better to do with your
evening?” Jim asks me.
I smile at him. “I certainly do, Jim. But duty calls.”
He púrses his lips.
“OK, but listen Max: we gotta make this one quick,
ok?”
It’s not what I expected. But I should have. There’s
a big conference in the city, and all of the police
force are required to go, even me.
But sometimes, work comes first. Like tonight.
It smells like… old coffee and dust in here. The
lights are white, but not overly bright. There is a
sense of barely contained chaos in the stacks of
paperwork on the desks and the overflowing garbage
can. It’s quiet as a casket, except for the faint hum of
the phosphorescent lights. The air feels thick when I
breathe it.

It’s not the best precinct in the city, not by a mile. But it’s mine. I look over to my desk as Jim begins to process the prisoner. My desk isn’t stacked up with paperwork. It’s organized and tidy. Even clean.
Clean!
I vaguely hear Jim’s voice as I think about how big
this is. I’m vibrating with excitement.
“Ma’am, the more you fight me, the longer this
is going to drag out,” Jim explains calmly. Jenny
doesn’t say anything though. But that’s the problem. She doesn’t say anything.
I glance their way as they pull me out of my reverie.
She’s really a decidedly attractive woman, I think to
myself. She’s
“Her name is Jenny Ortega,” I tell him. “She’s the
one who got the Baron off.”
For a moment, Jim is silent as he stares at her. I can
see his face shift minutely. Because I’ve known him
for so long, I can tell that his opinion of her has drastically changed in the span of a few seconds.
drastically changed in the span of a few seconds.
Finally, he speaks.
“I have just the place for her.”
He inserts the information that I give him into the system, and then fingerprints Jenny. I already know
that she has no weapons, as I already searched her
when I made the arrest.
When we’re finished processing her into the system, I roughly guide her into the back, where the cell is
located.
“Which one, Jim?” I ask him jokingly. There is only
one.
“Put her in that one,” he tells me.
I grin. It’s perfect. It’s a pretty shitty cell. It only has
a hard bench against the back wall. It smells bad,
and there is a… disturbing stain in the middle of the
concrete floor. Each cell is isolated from the others
in order to keep the prisoners from hurting one another. All in all, it’s maybe eight feet by eight feet. Not huge.
All the better.
All the better.
I can feel her barely–contained rage as I roughly set her into her cell. I lock the door behind her as Jim
watches on.
“Gimme your hands,” I demand gruffly. She complies, putting her cuffed hands through the bars. I remove her cuffs, being sure not to be too careful.
“Alright Max, I gotta get out of here now,” Jim exclaims. “If I miss this thing the chief is going to
put me in there.”
I smile in response. “Ok Jim. Thanks for the help. You have a good night.
I hear the sound of the buzzer as he makes his way
through the door and back into the processing area,
ultimately leaving the precinct.
It’s just me and her now..
I feel giddy. Ecstatic. This is finally the break that I
needed.
I have some paperwork to do. I decide to do it here.
on the small desk in the cellblock, so that I can keep
an eve on this vixen.
For a moment, I feel pity. Just for a moment. She’s human garbage. But all the same, I feel… something radiating from her cell. It feels like sadness. A
deep, aching sadness. She looks up at me for but a moment, and I confirm it in her dark eyes. I realize I’ve been staring at her.
After some time, she gets up again, and begins to pace. There is a morbid silence between us in the dimly lit block. I can’t help but notice that she’s a beautiful woman, despite her drawbacks. She is slim and fit. I notice that she’s tucked her shirt in
again. It’s not low–cut, per se, but it’s not shy about showing some of her cleavage, which gently presses against the fabric of her shirt.
I hadn’t seen it before, through all of my anger and my hatred of the woman. I give my head a shake, and go back to my paperwork.
Get your shit together, Max. She’s a criminal.
As I contemplate this, the room suddenly goes dark.
Jenny shrieks sharply for but a second, before she
gets herself under control again.
don’t blame her. It startled me too.

The backup lights come back on, but I don’t hear the tell–tale click of the door system working.
“No, no, no, no, no!” I begin mumbling as I quickly make my way toward the door.
I pass my card in front of the sensor.
Nothing.
I try again, with the same result.
a the
I begin handle, and rattling the door. It
makes some noise, but it doesn’t open.
“Goddammit!” I mutter, louder than I would have
liked.
It would appear that I’m stuck in here with her until the power comes back, and there’s nobody else
coming until tomorrow morning.
