- Chapter
Turns out, the police can get somewhere pretty
quickly when they want to. I’m shocked at how fast they get here.
Max is bandaged up beside me as we’re getting debriefed by the chief. Turns out, it was only a small
piece of shrapnel that had lodged into his rib.
I feel so relieved. It’s so weird. I would have killed
this guy myself not just a few hours ago, and now…
now I want to…
“Sir, as it turns out, she was just a plant. The Baron
has been threatening her son so she’d do his bidding.
She says she’ll testify for us.
“Not for “you,” as in “the police.” I’ll testify for
Max, and to keep me and Rafe safe.‘
I look beside me at my son. He’s a teenager now,
but… still my little boy. As soon as we got access to
but… still my little boy. As soon as we got access to the outside world, Max had one of his own private
security go and pick him up.
“It would take the police too long,” he had told me. Huh. Seems like he actually does have the money to back up that mouth of his.
Unfortunately, Prins Es, legendary Dutch assassin, J survived the encounter. He’s bandaged up and being
debriefed himself.
“He was second on my list, so he’s fine,” he had
said. As if that made it any better. Part of me
regretted not issuing a more permanent fix to the problem of his being alive when I had the chance.
I try hard to breathe normally after everything that
just happened. It’s hard for me to recognize that even after all of this, it was only just the beginning.

“You know… I really thought you were just another piece of garbage like the rest of them.” I tell Max. He’s brought me to some super posh mountain retreat. I’ve never seen so many nice things in one
place in my entire life
“Why would you… how could you go around risking your life when you have this to come back to every day?” I ask him.
“Well…” He takes a moment to think about his
response.
He’s dressed in a similar outfit to what he was
wearing at the precinct. It’s been a couple of weeks
now, and so far, it would seem that the Baron’s men
hadn’t been able to find us.
Myself, I’m wearing something a little more
fetching. Today, at least. It’s a nice, scarlet dress.
People always say that it goes well with my
complexion, and I have to agree with them.
“I just think it’s the right thing to do, you know? It’s
our job to change the world. The people with the money, I mean. I think it’s hard to expect people to
change things when they’re barely scraping a living
together as it is.”
He had offered to let me and Rafe stay in our own
place, with some of his “highly screened guards.”
But then I wouldn’t have been able to get to know
But… then I wouldn’t have been able to get to know this guy better.
We do have our own beds, though, and our own rooms… for now. Well, actually Rafe sleeps in my room with me. There’s no way I’m letting him out of my sight for a very long time.
I look through the immense window in front of me. It has a breathtaking view of the mountains. They’re
covered in snow, and it looks like there’s a lot of
wind out there.
But here inside, it’s so warm. So cozy. I look over at
Max.
At first, I had been so careful. I mostly kept to
myself, and I made sure that Rafe did the same. But
there’s just… something about Max. He’s genuine.
And infectious.
Max looks over and smiles at me. Somehow, it
makes me melt. I feel like a teenager again. What is
this man doing to me?
I don’t even know. I feel like I’m losing all control,
like everything rational and normal was just a
Con Leven know feel like I’m losing all control,
like everything rational and normal was just at
simulation, and now I’m in the real world.
Like it was all just a nightmare. I’m just comfortable.
Is that weird?
“What?” he asks me. It breaks me out of my reverie,
and I realize I’ve been staring at him this whole
time.
I get up out of the luxurious chair, and take Max by
the hand. He is surprised, but he follows me.
“Where are we going?” he asks me.
“Shhh.”
I bring him to my room, and close the door behind
- me.
“I have to… talk with you about something… private,” I tell him.
For a moment, he stands silently, listening. And then
he gets it. I find it so cute.
I plant a seductive kiss on his lips, and I feel him
turn into jelly. He feels so good, smells so good…
turn into jelly He feels so good, smells so good…
I slowly pull the straps of my dress down over my shoulders, one at a time. He watches very closely. I let my dress fall to the ground, exposing my naked and perky breasts.
“I think that we hadn’t finished this conversation before, you know, in the police station…”
He smiles at the joke, but then… the smile goes away almost immediately.
“Jenny, I…I don’t think we can do this. It would
look very bad if I was having, um, ‘romantic.
relations‘ with my witness…”
OH MY GOD!
“Max. Shut up. Stop being an idiot.”
He thinks for a moment. Just a moment. Perhaps less than a moment. And then he shrugs.
“Good enough for me…
He grabs me from behind, kissing my neck and
pressing his hardness into me from behind. God, it feels so good. It’s been so long…

“I, uh, seem to recall that there were certain
prohibited areas of contact,” he whispers into my ear
as he plants another kiss on my neck.
I can’t help but giggle like a little girl again.
“This time it’s a requirement,” I reply.
