Chapter 12 Why Should I Feel Guilty?

The glass at the entrance was shattered, leaving a mess all over the ground. Inside the shop, chaos reigned, with pots and pans scattered everywhere, and tables and chairs overturned haphazardly..
As Sabrina surveyed the wreckage, she was about to call someone to find out where everyone was when a sharp cry suddenly pierced the air from the private room in the back.
She turned and pushed the door open, only to find Olivia casually perched at a table, flanked by several men in black suits.
In the corner, Jane crouched down, her parents weeping as they held a small boy close, their glares directed at Jane, as if she were the enemy rather than their daughter.
Sabrina quickly moved to help Jane up. “Jane, are you okay?”
She scanned Jane from head to toe, relieved to see Jane was unharmed.
“Rina, I’m okay.” Jane sniffled, her eyes welling up with tears.
Jane’d never thought Sabrina would show up, especially when she knew it was a risky move.

Hearing Jane’s words, Sabrina whipped around to face Olivia. “What the hell do you want?”
Olivia smirked. “You know why I trashed this shop, right?”
Just the mere idea of seeing Sabrina grovel at her feet sent at thrill of delight through Olivia.
Sabrina squinted her eyes and let out a soft chuckle. “It’s because of me.”
She’d seen through Olivia’s dirty tricks even before she’d set foot here.
Sabrina responded with such determination that Olivia was caught off guard, seemingly not expecting her to deviate from the norm.
But Olivia didn’t really care.
Olivia snapped back, “Glad you’re owning up to it.
“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have to mess with Jane. She’s in this mess because she’s friends with you. Don’t you feel bad?”
Sabrina stayed as cool as a cucumber and replied off–handedly, “Why should I feel bad?
I haven’t done anything wrong.
Olivia was taken aback by Sabrina’s self–assured comeback and

stumbled for a moment. Frustrated, she screamed at Sabrina, “If you hadn’t ticked me off, Jane wouldn’t be in this pickle!”
“You’re the one causing headaches for Jane. You’re the one who trashed their store. What’s that got to do with me? Did I tell you to do this?” Sabrina asked, genuinely puzzled by Olivia’s warped logic.
Olivia was left speechless. She whipped her head around to look at Jane, her annoyance reaching a boiling point.
“Jane, is this what you call a good friend? You think of her ast one, but it’s pretty clear she doesn’t feel the same way!”
Jane bit her lip and kept her mouth shut.
Seeing her reaction, Olivia piled on. “If it weren’t for her, d’you think you’d be in this fix today?”
Just then, Caleb Davis‘ harsh voice cut through the thick tension. “Jane, look at the so–called friends you’ve got! They’ve wrecked our shop! Apologize to this lady right this second!”
Then he shot a sycophantic look at Olivia, looking like a stray dog begging for handouts on the street.
At that moment, all sense of dignity went out the window.
“You shut your mouth,” Jane snapped, utterly mortified by her father’s actions.
Why on earth am I related to this guy?

Caleb felt the burn of embarrassment under his daughter’s glare and was about to say something, but then he noticed Olivia. hadn’t said a word yet, so he clamped his mouth shut.
A couple of minutes later, the wail of police sirens filled the air outside.
Olivia’s face went as pale as a ghost.
“Who the hell tipped off the cops?”
The Morgan family was roughly a big deal in Los Angeles. Hardly anyone would dare to mess with them.
After all, it wasn’t the first time she’d pulled stunts like this outside, leveraging her status as a member of the Morgan family. Nothing bad had ever come of it, and no one had ever dared to butt in.
But now, she was in a pickle she’d never seen coming.
Suddenly, Sabrina’s voice reverberated through the room, giving Olivia quite a start.
“I’m the one who called the cops,” Sabrina said, her voice firm as a rock.
Olivia’s face contorted with annoyance. “Without the Sterling family in your corner, you better think twice about crossing me, you know?”

Sabrina cocked an eyebrow. “If I’m not scared of the Sterlings, why would I be spooked by you?”
Is Olivia really that green?
I’ve made it to twenty–eight in my past life. A high–school threat isn’t going to rattle me.
Meanwhile, the wail of the sirens made Rachel Davis, Jane’s mom, shake like a leaf. She hugged the little boy in her arms. tightly and looked at Sabrina, all shaky. “Please, you gotta tell the cops it was a misunderstanding.”
Fearing Sabrina might not go along, she quickly added, “I know you’re Jane’s friend, but we’re just regular folks. We don’t want any heat. And Jane’s brother is still young; he needs us…”
Rachel’s voice was barely a murmur, and her eyes kept darting around like she was hiding something.
Sabrina brushed her off and turned back to Jane, her expression calm and reassuring. “Jane, have faith in me. I’ll keep you safe, and your family’ll be okay.”
Just then, two cops strolled in.
“Who made the call?”
Sabrina shot her hand up and stepped forward.
“These guys trashed this family’s shop,” she said, then filled the
officers in on the whole deal in detail.

In the end, the whole bunch got hauled to the station. Since Sabrina was a minor, the police gave Theodore a ring.
Once at the station, Sabrina played ball with the officers and gave her statement.
While they were hanging around waiting, Olivia’s parents showed up.

When Caleb and Rachel caught wind that the Morgans were willing to shell out a cool 100 thousand dollars to settle, their eyes lit up like greedy little bulbs.
They jumped at the chance and signed the settlement papers right away.
After stuffing the cash in their pockets, they took off with their son, not giving a second thought to poor Jane, who was standing there all alone, looking lost.
For a split–second, Jane felt like the air was being squeezed out of her as she watched the three of them walk away.
Once they were gone, Olivia cocked an eyebrow at Sabrina, a glint of challenge in her eyes.
Jack Morgan, Olivia’s dad, followed his daughter’s look.
“So, you’re Sabrina?” he sneered, sizing her up with obvious. disgust.

“A puny kid thinking you can take on the Morgans. Do you have any idea what befalls those who mess with us?”
Sabrina couldn’t mask her revulsion at the striking similarity. between the father and daughter.
“To be honest, I’ve no clue what’ll happen to me, but I’m dead sure you’re going to hit some rough patches,” Sabrina said.
Jack let out a scoff, his voice oozing with contempt. “You’ve got some serious guts for a little girl who’s still wet behind the ears. You really think you can stir up a storm?
“Just look at how things turned out today. Even if you called the cops ten times over, all it’d mean is I’d have to fork out a bit
more cash.”
As soon as he finished, another icy voice cut in from the doorway.
“I’m not sure what kind of storm Sabrina can brew, but I know I can flatten you like a sandcastle on the beach.”
Sabrina’s eyes snapped to the newcomer.
Theodore marched in, brushing past everyone else, and made a beeline for Sabrina. Before she could utter a word, he spun her around by the shoulder and locked eyes with her. In that instant, she could see the worry etched deep in his eyes.
Suddenly, it dawned on her that he truly cared about her.

“Thank God you’re okay.” Theodore said, releasing a breath he hadn’t even realized he’d been holding after making sure Sabrina was unharmed.
