Chapter 5
My steps grew heavier and heavier in the darkness, along with my slowing breath.
Finally, I couldn’t hold on any longer and fell forward.
Before I sank into unconsciousness, I fell into an utterly icy embrace.

Coming around, the harsh light made my eyelids flutter. After adjusting to it, I opened my eyes.
In the next second, I saw a pure white ceiling, a vintage crystal chandelier, and a spacious room filled with sunlight.
“Finally, you’re awake.”
Turning my head, I saw Alden Jensen, the vampire I signed the new Blood Oath with.
If it weren’t for his extremely pale face, I wouldn’t have been able to tell he was actually a vampire.
Looking at him, who was sitting by the bed with sunlight illuminating his face, I subconsciously asked, “Are you… not afraid of light?”
He chuckled. “If so, I’d become the butt of the joke.”
That was right. I just remembered that Alden was a Lord, the highest rank among the vampires.
Then my promise came back to my mind. I propped myself up on my arm,

trying to get up. “I’ll sign with you right now.”
He stopped me by helping me lie down again and tucking me in.
“No rush. Focus on recovering. You lost so much blood. Coupled with your wounds… It’ll take a lot of time before you feel better.”
Those painful memories suddenly surged and stabbed me like a sharp knife, and the pain of being forced to give out my blood overwhelmed me
at once.
I regained my sensations again and then noticed the thick layers of gauze wrapped around my neck and arms.
Alden placed his cold hand on my head.
He stroked my rough hair again and again, the icy touch reminding me of the embrace before I lost consciousness.
It never felt so real–I managed to get out of the castle.
Suddenly, I felt a lump in my throat. The corner of my lip twitched, and my eyes turned red.
Tears streamed down my checks and fell to the pillow as I covered my face with my arms, biting my trembling lip.
I had loved Sean for seven years. On countless nights, I had fantasized about him loving me back.
But in the end, I ended up with a broken heart.
Maybe Alden didn’t want my wounds to be wet by my tears; he gently pulled my hands away, pressed a fresh handkerchief into my palm, and left quietly, leaving me enough time to get it out of my system.
I forgot how long I cried that day; after that, I stayed.
In Alden’s castle, no one needed to block out the light during the day, and everyone here led a life with distinct day and night rhythms..
I could bask in the sun whenever I wanted to and walk around freely. There were no rules or boundaries.
Alden barely went out. Most of the time, he’d stay with me in the castle, and he wouldn’t disturb me. He’d only be with me when my wounds were dressed and when I was eating.
Time passed by quickly. Gradually, my wounds healed, and my pale complexion caused by long–term blood loss looked healthy, my limbs. were no longer that emaciated, and my newly grown hair lustered.
One day, I knocked on the door to Alden’s study and told him I wanted a trip back to the human world.
He said, “OK. I’ll go with you.”
At midnight, we reached the platform before the train was about to leave.
As we were about to board, someone stumbled forward and stood in front of us.
“Scarlett!” The person gripped my wrist hard, making me shrink in pain.
Alden immediately pushed him a few meters away and shielded me behind him.
Sean’s eyes were bloodshot, adding a touch of sadness to his haggard appearance. I could barely recognize him–he had always been meticulous about his looks.
He asked Alden, his voice hoarse, “Who are you?”
Walking out from behind Alden, I said to him indifferently, “My new
master.

My answer made him frown, and he leaned forward to grab me again. As I dodged away, his hand froze in mid–air.
“Come back with me,” Sean said.
“We have nothing to do with each other anymore, Sean,” I said, making my attitude clear by saying his name.
He extended his hand. “Then give me my Oath Necklace back.”
The loudspeaker on the platform rang out, reminding passengers to board. I didn’t want to miss the train, and nor did I want to waste my time on
him.
So, I said straightforwardly, “I burned it.”
Under my gaze, it turned into a handful of ashes and then a wisp of smoke.
I continued, “Our Blood Oath is broken. We are both free now.”
From now on, me and my blood had nothing to do with him.
He widened his eyes in great disbelief, his eyelashes fluttering. I could see my reflection in his eyes.
“What did you say?” He approached me again. Trying to be patient, he said to me, “Come back with me first. We’ll talk then.”
“Come back with you?” I sneered, the things he had mercilessly done to me emerging in my mind. “So that you can feed my blood to someone else again?”
“That’s not what I meant. Let’s talk things out,” he said, trying to explain. “Scarlett, come on. Come back with me.”

I didn’t have to take orders from a stranger.
The train doors were about to close.
I gently tugged at Alden’s sleeve. Knowing what I meant, he wrapped his arm around my waist immediately, and we void–stepped inside the train.
By the time Sean reacted, we were already separated by the tightly closed train door. I watched as he punched the car door desperately.
The train started and disappeared from the platform in the blink of an eye.
Seven years ago, I met Sean in the human world.
In a filthy alley, the hobo on top of me was drained of blood before he could scream in pain.
Lying on the ground, I was covered in wounds and didn’t even have the strength to run away. I closed my eyes, waiting to die the same way.
But the vampire put his fangs away, picked me up, and draped his cloak
over me.
