Chapter 21
Sarah looked at Scarlett, who was visibly worried for her. With a sigh, Sarah explained patiently, “Scarlett, since I was willing to divorce James, it shows that I’ve already moved on. I don’t plan on staying single forever, but right now, I just haven’t met anyone who makes my heart flutter.”
Scarlett let out a relieved “Oh,” finally at ease. (1)
But then she remembered that even someone as charming and handsome as Zachary hadn’t managed to catch Sarah’s eye, and she couldn’t help but wonder what Sarah had ever seen in that jerk, James.
Since they had work the next day, Scarlett didn’t stay too late, helping Sarah clean up before heading home. 1)
The following morning, Sarah was up early. During her years of marriage to James, the Chancer family had expected her to stay home, playing the perfect trad wife and dutiful daughter–in–law. Now, returning to work filled her with excitement and
anticipation.
The university wasn’t far from her apartment, so she decided to walk. As she enjoyed the crisp morning air and bustling campus
atmosphere, an unfortunately familiar voice cut through her peace.
“Sarah Sanders? What are you doing here?”
Sarah turned and, unsurprisingly, found herself facing Lucy’s shocked and disdainful expression.
She frowned and decided to ignore her.
But Lucy wasn’t one to let things go and quickly walked over to block her path.
“What, are you deaf? I’m asking what you’re doing here. Do you think you can just waltz into a place like Adams University?”
Lucy had always treated Sarah with contempt, before and after the divorce. But Sarah was no longer the same woman who would
quietly endure her insults.
“Move,” Sarah said, adjusting the strap of her bag, her voice calm yet carrying a note of chill,
Lucy’s face twisted with anger, shocked that Sarah would dare dismiss her so openly. Sarah had always bent over backward for
her in the past.
“Sarah, who do you think you are? Don’t get cocky just because you divorced my brother! Do you think a top university like
Adams University would accept someone like you–a divorced, low–educated woman? Get lost! Don’t lower the standards of this
place just by standing here!”
Her words were harsh and insulting.
Sarah lowered her lashes slightly. She had heard far worse from Lucy and her mother over the years. Clearly, the water Sarah had

Raising her gaze, Sarah’s voice was calm yet sharp. “You know, Lucy, Adams University prides itself on integrity and kindness. Having a student like you is a disgrace to this place.
”
“What did you say?” Lucy’s face froze, then twisted with fury as she jabbed a finger toward Sarah’s face. “You lowlife! Who do
think you are to lecture me? Look at your own education! The university’s motto has nothing to do with you!”

Growing tired of her, Sarah casually pulled out her work ID and flashed it in front of Lucy’s eyes. “Take a good look. I work at
Adams University.”
Lucy was too stunned by the fact that Sarah worked there to catch her job title. Then, a sneer crept onto her face. “Someone like you–no education, no degree–must be here as a janitor, right? Sarah, you couldn’t survive without my brother, so now you’re reduced to cleaning floors? Honestly, that job was probably your true calling all along, if not for marrying him.”
Sarah didn’t particularly care for Lucy’s petty taunts, but a glance at her watch showed it was almost eight. She didn’t want to be
late on her first day. (2
Her tone turned colder, with a hint of impatience. “Lucy, I’m divorced from your brother. There’s no need for you to come here. loolding for some sense of superiority. Instead of buzzing around me like a fly, maybe focus on buttering up your new sister–in-
law.”
