Chapter 22
“You!” Lucy was furious, her anger reaching a boiling point after Sarah’s sharp comeback.
How had she never noticed that Sarah could be so sharp–tongued? All that sweet, dutiful wife act back when she was married into
the Chancer family had clearly been a facade!
“You just wait!” Lucy stomped her foot in frustration. “I’ll make sure my brother uses his connections to get you fired. Then
you’ll see what happens when you mess with me!”
As far as she was concerned, getting a mere cleaner like Sarah dismissed was a simple matter.
“Really? And what happens when my friend crosses you, Miss Chancer?” A clear, confident voice suddenly rang out from the
crowd that had gathered around them.
Mia pushed through the onlookers and, seeing that Lucy was the one giving Sarah trouble, frowned slightly. The Chancer family
might not be at the top of the social ladder, but they had some standing in the East Coast, and Lucy had always used that to act high and mighty around school. Though Mia usually ignored her, seeing her pick on Sarah was too much.
Mia barely knew Sarah, but from the first moment she’d met her, she’d genuinely liked her. And now, without a second thought, she was stepping up to defend her.
Lucy was momentarily taken aback by Mia’s appearance.
Wait, did Mia just call Sarah a friend?
Mia, the darling of the Reynolds family, was a student at Adams University, and Lucy had always hoped to befriend her. But Mia
had never shown any interest in being her friend, which people had always said was due to her reserved nature. But somehow,
Sarah befriended Mia?
“Well, Sarah, looks like you’re pretty good at cozying up to the right people!” Lucy sneered, unable to risk offending Mia, so she redirected her anger at Sarah.
Before Sarah could respond, Mia stepped right in front of her, blocking Lucy’s view and cutting her off.
“Watch your mouth, Lucy. Explain how exactly Miss Sanders is ‘cozying up‘ to anyone.
Seeing Mia openly defend Sarah, Lucy’s face changed, but she quickly forced a fake smile, hoping to gain favor.
“Mia, don’t be fooled by this manipulative woman. Back then, my brother didn’t even like her, but she schemed her way into our family. Luckily, he was clear–headed enough to never sleep with her because he was waiting for his true love. Now that she’s
back, Sarah’s been kicked to the curb.”
As she spoke, an unpleasant realization seemed to dawn on Lucy. Her smile twisted with disdain.
“Sarah must be out of options after the divorce and latched onto you. If I’m not wrong, you probably helped her get that job here at Adams University, right?”

“Enough! “Just because you see the world through a calculating lens doesn’t mean everyone else does.” Mia’s face showed her irritation, and like a protective little lioness, she fired back at Lucy.
“For the record, Sarah got this job at Adams University through her qualifications. And as for your brother–if he supposedly had a ‘true love,‘ why did he even marry Sarah in the first place? Then, when this “true love‘ reappeared, he threw Sarah aside. That
makes him nothing but a jerk!“”
Sarah watched Mia standing up for her, touched by the younger girl’s fierce loyalty. She hadn’t expected Mia to step in like this,
especially considering they’d only met once.
Yet, even this young girl could see James’s blatant lack of character. How had she, back then, been so blind, throwing herself into
marriage with James just because he’d said, “She’s gone now. If you’re willing, I could settle for marrying you“?
