Chapter 41
James’s eyes darkened, his lip twitching involuntarily.
The woman in front of him had changed so much that she now dared to speak to him in such a tone.
Seeing his silence, Sarah had no interest in prolonging this encounter and turned to leave.
But before she could step away, a strong hand gripped her wrist.
James had run out of patience. He yanked her back roughly, leaving visible marks on her skin.
“Ouch-”
Sarah clutched her aching wrist, glaring up at him.
“James Chancer, what do the hell you want? You-”
“We need to talk.”
He cut her off coldly, his eyes unconsciously fixing on her reddening wrist, stirring unexpected emotions.
Sarah let out a harsh laugh. “Sorry, not interested. There’s nothing to discuss.”
Her dismissal caught James off guard, igniting his anger.
“Sarah, I tried to keep things civil. I gave you money and property out of guilt, but that was before I knew you were involved with another man. Is that why you signed the divorce papers so eagerly? Was it because you already had someone waiting?”
“What did you say?”
Sarah was stunned that such words could come from James’s mouth.
At this moment, Sarah found it almost laughable and saw no point in arguing further.
“Think whatever you want.”
Her indifference made his anger feel futile. He clenched his fist, looking down at her, and spoke without thinking:
“Sarah, I’m going to find evidence of your infidelity during our marriage. Once I do, I’ll take legal action to reclaim everything I
gave you.”
Sarah looked directly at him for the first time that day, her bright eyes filled with ice–cold contempt that made James’s heart
skip.
She realized for the first time just how shameless the man she’d loved for years had become.
“You know better than anyone who was unfaithful during our marriage, James. I don’t know whether to call you childish or just
shameless.”

She paused, her pretty face showing rare irritation. “You wanted the divorce, you wanted your happily–ever–after with Charlotte so I gave you your freedom. We’ve had nothing to do with each other since the divorce. I just want to live my life in peace. James,
we barely saw each other during our marriage – now that we’re divorced, go play the devoted fiancé with Charlotte and stop
trying to insert yourself into my life.”
“I won’t give up what I received in the divorce. Investigate if you want, take me to court if you must, but don’t waste your time trying to intimidate me.”
The property James had given her wasn’t really what she cared about, but some lines couldn’t be crossed. Her past tolerance had
made the Chancers think they could push her around at will. 1
James stood speechless, his throat tight with words he couldn’t express.
“Suit yourself.”
Sarah, unwilling to prolong this any further, left with those final words.
This time, James didn’t stop her.
Watching her walk away, he felt an unexpected sense of defeat. His anger surged again, accompanied by an inexplicable sadness.
