Chapter 54
What?
Give it to Lucy?!
Charlotte froze momentarily, internally cursing their shamelessness. But having already expressed her indifference to the money, she couldn’t backtrack now. Though seething inside, she had to swallow her anger, only her slightly stiff smile hinting at her true feelings.
“Whatever Mrs. Chancer thinks is best.” Charlotte maintained her composure, turning to Lucy with a smile. “Lucy, since you’re the one who interacts with Sarah the most at school, you probably have the best insight into how people perceive her. Perhaps you could focus on that angle. After all, university students haven’t experienced the real world yet and can be easily swayed. Maybe you can use that to shift their opinions.”
She’d said enough – whether Lucy understood was her problem. Whatever happened afterward wouldn’t be Charlotte’s
responsibility.
After all, she’d merely made a suggestion, not told her to do anything extreme.
Lucy’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Charlotte, you’re so clever! I know exactly what to do. I’ll make that bitch Sarah cough up
everything she swallowed. It belongs to the Chancers anyway!”
Charlotte lowered her head with a smile, her eyes glinting with cold calculation.
The next morning at Adams University’s entrance.
Sarah wore her usual casual style, feeling good after yesterday’s events.
But looking up, she spotted Lucy waiting nearby and frowned.
Lucy approached her arrogantly. “Sarah, I’m apologizing for my mother about yesterday. She didn’t mean it – she was acting on
information from someone else.”
She briefly showed Sarah her phone before quickly pulling it back. “Someone sent Mom an anonymous email. You know how
protective she is of my brother. She couldn’t bear to see him wronged, which led to this misunderstanding.”
Sarah remained unmoved, her face calm. She knew exactly what kind of people Lucy and her mother were after living with them
for three years.
With their personalities, it was already remarkable they hadn’t retaliated. A genuine apology? Impossible.
If something seemed unusual, there was bound to be a hidden motive.
“Sarah, whether you believe me or not, I’m sincerely apologizing. We caused you trouble, and we were wrong…”
Sarah walked past her without responding.
1/2
She couldn’t believe a single word, not even the punctuation marks.
Watching Sarah ignore her and walk away, Lucy felt rage surge through her. She stared at Sarah’s retreating figure, her hands clenching as if wanting to tear her to pieces.
She’d humbled herself to apologize, and Sarah hadn’t even bothered to respond. Who did she think she was?
But remembering her plan, Lucy forced herself to swallow her anger.
