Chapter 79
Charlotte leaned close to Lucy’s ear and whispered something. “This trick is called ‘luring the enemy in.““”
“An early birthday party? Will she come?” Lucy repeated blankly.
Mrs. Chancer protested, “I don’t want to see that woman, let alone invite her to Lucy’s birthday party. Absolutely not!”
–
But Lucy wasn’t concerned. She thought about what Charlotte had said if Sarah came, Zachary might come too. And if he didn’t,
there’d be no one to protect her.
Once Sarah was at the party, everything would fall into place exactly as she wanted.
Besides, her birthday was only a few days away holding it a couple days early, before the competition, wouldn’t matter.
“Mom! I’ve decided to have my birthday party early. Charlotte, you need to help me plan – she might not come otherwise,” Lucy’s
face clouded with worry.
“Lucy, think about what she needs most right now. Maybe you can use that,” Charlotte suggested softly.
Lucy fell into thought. “What she needs most?”
“I’ve got it! I know what to do!” Lucy’s lips curved into a smile, her earlier frustration vanishing.
The next morning, Sarah woke early and headed to school with Mia.
The activities department had already secured most of the judges for the upcoming competition. Only Jane Lawrence, the last
judge, still needed to confirm.
With just five days until the competition, Sarah knew she had to finalize Jane’s participation within the next two days so the planning team could prepare the event schedule and assign seating for the judges–a critical task.
But despite her efforts, checking Jane’s itinerary and even calling her assistant, the responses were all the same: Jane had no
time. Even speaking with her directly seemed impossible.
“Don’t worry,” the assistant had said. “If she becomes available, I’ll notify you immediately.”
“That’s good to hear.” The events team breathed a sigh of relief.
As Sarah worked on her PowerPoint presentation, a sudden knock at the door interrupted her. She glanced up
standing there.
Her brows furrowed, and her voice turned cold. “What do you want?”
“Sarah,” Lucy said mockingly, “is this how you treat students now that you’re a counsellor?”
to see Lucy
Sarah shot her a frosty look. “This is the counseling office, meant for students with psychological issues. I don’t think you have any–although, last time you came here, you scared off another student.”

“You” Lucy bit her tongue, forcing herself to stay calm. She had come here for an important reason, after all.
Reaching into her bag, Lucy pulled out an invitation card made of pink paper with gold embossing
Sarah didn’t even glance at it and pushed it back toward her. “You’re inviting me? You really think I’d go?”

“Don’t be so harsh. I know I was wrong at the last Chancer family banquet, and I already apologised. This time, it’s my birthday party. I’m personally inviting you.” Lucy’s tone turned serious.
Sarah thought for a moment, then scoffed. “Lucy, isn’t your birthday tomorrow? Don’t forget, I’ve helped host plenty of your birthday parties.”
“That’s true,” Lucy admitted, her expression indifferent. “But this year, I’m celebrating early. Besides, don’t you want to visit the Chancer house? Don’t you want to see my brother?”
Sarah a contemptuous look, convinced that her proclaimed disinterest in Zachary was a lie.
After all, Sarah’s years of simping for him couldn’t have been fake. Every time Lucy brought up Zachary, Sarah would inevitably
cave.
