Chapter 2
He changed dramatically.
I managed to calm down and look Darrell in the eye. Then, I showed them the wedding ring on my finger and tried to let my tone sound flat.
“You confused me for someone else.
“Besides. I’m married.”
They fell silent and looked at each other with embarrassment. In the end, they burst into laughter.
Darrell raised his eyebrows and glanced at my ring in nonchalance.
“Married? Your husband must be poor.
“And the ring must be cheap. Did you say that to help me remember you?”
Then, he stood up quickly and pulled off my ring with force.
I had been exhausted from work, so I wasn’t agile enough to stop that from happening.
Joselyn came over to scan the ring and then laughed.
“Darrell, do you remember your brother Tristan bought a pair of rings named Heart of Eternity in an auction in France 3 years ago? This ring looks like one of them.
“Is he Cecelia’s husband?”
Joselyn looked sideways at me and fiddled with the ring. They were all intrigued.
It sounded absurd to them.
After all, Tristan Lawson was the first heir to the Lawson family. He was decisive and showed no mercy to his enemies. No one in the business world dared to offend him.
But he married a mysterious woman suddenly 3 years ago and was crazy about her.
The paparazzi tried digging but found nothing about his wife and his son.
“Cecelia, are you telling us that you are the mysterious woman?”
The sparkling ring was tossed in the air and then fell back to Joselyn’s hand
“The fake is well made. Who made it for you?”
I ran out of patience with their sneers.
touch my ring. It’s real…”
Before I could finish my words, Darrell’s slap turned my head sideways, and my cheek was burning.
“Cecelia, are you insane? Everyone knows that Tristan is in deep love with his wife. He never let anyone see her, not even me. How dare you pose as her!”
licked my dried lips and turned my head slowly to meet Darrell’s eye.
Maybe because my look was terrifying, Darrell frowned.
Joselyn got angry and pointed at me. “Cecelia, where is your conscience? Darrell had promised to give you one day every week. It’s one thing that you don’t cherish the opportunity, but it’s another that you pose as his sister–in–law. Everyone in New York knows that Tristan has a soft spot for his wife. Are you trying to cause trouble for Darrell? How wicked you
are!”
Her words reminded me of the bad things she had done to me.
In the past. Joselyn had to keep the upper hand all the time.
To break up Darrell and me, she even slandered me in front of him every
day.
However, Darrell refused to believe her and punished her.
The man who had always been on my side was with Joselyn now.
He held Joselyn’s hand and threw a stack of banknotes at my face.
“All right. stop pretending. I’ll let you off for old times‘ sake. Take the money and go. It’ll be enough for you to enjoy life for one month.”
The notes cut my face, and blood seeped out. I ignored it and stared at
Darrell.
A look of guilt and panic flickered across his face.
Seeing that. I gave a derisive laugh and bent over.
He looked scornful again.
“I thought you wouldn’t take the money…”
The next second, he paused. Under his surprised gaze, I found the ring among the notes.
Darrell stopped me before I could leave the room.
“Why are you still pretending? With any note on the ground, you can buy dozens of cheap rings.”
There were mixed emotions on his face, and I could tell one of them was
anger
But I didn’t care. I slapped his hand away.
He didn’t see it coming, so he gnashed his teeth.
“Good for you. No wonder they say poor people are usually bad–tempered. Joselyn and I are getting married in 3 days. Tristan will come back that day and attend my wedding with his wife. I dare you to come!”
