He kicked me away, disgustedly brushing his
pants.
“If you don’t believe me, send someone home
to check if Mom is there.

Reluctantly, Ethan sent someone home to
check.
“Boss, Mrs. White is at home, reading.
Everything’s fine!”
Not long after he left, the man called, and
sent a video of my mother–in–law sitting
quietly at her desk, reading.
A shock ran through me. Wasn’t my mother-
in–law really kidnapped?
Ethan sneered, viciously kicking my stomach,
“Evelyn, you’re heartless. You’re still acting
even at death’s door. Do you ever tell the
truth?”
Enduring the tearing pain in my abdomen, I
called my sister–in–law:
“Claire, is Mom back?”
“Sis, Mom’s back.”
Hearing that my mother–in–law was back, I
L
felt relieved.
But the next second, my sister–in–law’s
words completely shattered me.
Chapter 2
“They brought Mom’s body back.”
My sister–in–law’s voice was filled with
despair.
A flicker of panic crossed Ethan White’s face,
but then he seemed to remember something.
He grabbed my hair,
“Evelyn, you’re so cunning! You even tricked
my own sister.”
He flung me away, the phone in his hand
smashing into my forehead.
Blood gushed instantly.
Ignoring the pain, I examined the video the
man had sent again. I finally spotted a glaring
flaw.
“Ethan White, this video is wrong. It’s
daytime, but the lights are on. Mom never
turned on the lights during the day. Don’t you
remember?”
But Ethan ignored me, throwing the phone to
the ground.
“You’re trying to twist things around. Evelyn, I
won’t believe anything you say! I’m not as
stupid as you think!”
“Whether you believe it or not, Mom is dead!
You killed her!”
Mom died without Ethan saving her. How
desperate she must have been.
I wanted to save her, but failed. Now, all I
wanted was to see her again, even if it was
just her body.
I turned to leave, but Tiffany blocked my path.
“Evelyn, you’re leaving already? You haven’t
wished our Moonie a happy birthday yet!”
She turned to Ethan, instantly adopting a
coquettish tone,
“Ethan, she ruined Moonie’s birthday party.
She needs to apologize.”
Moonie was Tiffany’s dog.
The first time I heard its name, I was furious,
but Ethan said I was overthinking, it was just
a coincidence.
Until I overheard Tiffany and Ethan saying, “I
named him Moonie, so Evelyn is my dog. She
stole Ethan from me.”
Ethan indulged her, completely captivated by
her.
I realized then, in Ethan’s eyes, I wasn’t even
worth a dog.
“Did you hear that? Apologize to Moonie!”
