Chapter 117
“Zachary Reynolds?” James narrowed his eyes.
Why was he here, at Sarah’s apartment, at this hour?

“I came to see Sarah for something important. This has nothing to do with you, Mr. Reynolds,” James said stiffly.
Zachary’s gaze turned ice cold. “Scarlett and Sasa already told you you’re not welcome here. If you’ve got time to waste standing around, why don’t you focus on getting your sister out of jail? The school reported her, and the decision was unanimously approved by the board. This has nothing to do with Sarah.”
Hearing Zachary refer to her as “Sasa” with such familiarity only made James’s expression darken further.
“Mr. Reynolds, the Chancers is also part of the school board. I don’t recall any formal board meeting being held,” James said with
a hard edge. Did Zachary think the board belonged to him alone?
Zachary looked indifferent, his tone casual yet cutting, “Ah, I forgot. You “are” on the board. But isn’t it true that the Reynolds family holds the largest share?”
“Mr. Reynolds, whatever happened, Sarah and I were married for three years. That history gives me the right to speak to her. It’s
none of your business.”
Scarlett let out a mocking laugh. “You’ve got some nerve, James. One minute you’re talking about being her husband, the next you’re harping on about three years of love. Do you want me to believe you’re some heartbroken man who still cares about her? Let me remind you–it was YOU who asked for the divorce. And why did you get divorced? Because of your mom and your sister. They bullied Sarah even when she was part of your family, and now they’re still at it. And you have the gall to come here and beg
her to let Lucy off the hook? Dream on!”
Scarlett’s anger bubbled over. Just remembering how Sarah had been treated like a maid back then made her furious, Without warning, she grabbed the glass of water in front of her and dumped it right over James’s head.
James flinched, his hand trembling as he wiped his face. He looked at Sarah, frustration in his voice. “I didn’t know what my
mom and sister were doing. I swear.”
“That’s enough!” Sarah’s expression was icy. “James, just leave. There’s no point talking to me about Lucy. And I don’t want to
see you ever again.”
Zachary stepped aside, his tone flat. “Didn’t you hear her?”
James clenched his jaw, his guilt leaving him no choice but to step back. He turned and left, but at the elevator, he stopped and
looked back one last time.
Through the open door, he saw Sarah laughing as she spoke to Zachary, Scarlett was happily opening bags of food Zachary had brought, shouting excitedly, “Wow, there’s so much good food!”

The scene was jarring. Compared to the coldness and hostility he’d just received, this warmth was like a slap in the face. He felt
like an intruder, completely out of place.
But it hadn’t always been like this.
He had never seen Sarah act so confident, so untouchable. The woman he remembered had always been quiet and mild, her face
calm and expressionless. But now she smiled, and it was dazzling.
Suddenly, memories came flooding back–memories of the warm soup she’d made for him after a night of drinking, the honey drink she’d prepared to ease his hangovers. All of it was gone now, completely out of reach.
James’s chest tightened, a sour ache spreading inside him. When he finally got back into his car, his phone rang. It was his
_____ mother.
“James, did you talk to her? What did she say? Is she willing to let your sister go?”
James rubbed his forehead, frustration boiling over. “I’ll talk to you when I get back.”
Before his mother could say more, he hung up and slammed his hands against the steering wheel in anger. It took him a while to calm down enough to start the car and drive away.
Upstairs in Sarah’s apartment, Scarlett was unpacking all the food Zachary had brought, spreading it out on the dining table. She gawked at the containers in amazement. “This is *all* from Ming’s Kitchen. That place is impossible to get takeout from! It smells incredible.”
Sarah looked up at Zachary in surprise. “Weren’t you taking Mia to the hospital? How did you get back so quickly? And why are you here again?”
