Chapter 1
My husband. Anthony Conway, went bankrupt. To avoid dragging met down, he asked for a divorce.
I couldn’t bear to see him struggle. So, even while pregnant, I juggled five part–time jobs just to help him start over.
At the end of the month, I finally got paid. Excited, I went to him with the money in hand, thinking I could finally ease his burden, only to hear him. speaking Spanish on the phone.
“My wife’s here. She doesn’t understand Spanish. So tell me how Luna is doing now.
The person on the phone said, “Luna’s fine, but Mr. Conway… Mrs. Conway is working five jobs because she believes you’re broke. And she’s pregnant. It’s dangerous for her to go out there all alone. I don’t think we should keep lying to her.”
Anthony paused, looking at me with a hint of coldness in his eyes.
“No. I must divorce her. Luna is seriously ill now, and she doesn’t have much time left. Her biggest wish is to have a grand wedding. I gotta fulfill her wish.”
I stared at Anthony, feeling as if a bucket of ice water had been poured
over me.
Did he forget I could understand Spanish?
The guy on the phone sounded a bit flustered, continuing to persuade

Anthony, “But Mr. Conway, you know that Luna’s been faking her illness. The person who’s never left your side is Mrs. Conway!
“Even if you want a divorce, you shouldn’t lie to her. Today, I saw her selling 800 ml of blood by hiding her pregnancy. If this goes on, she…”
“Enough!” Before the person on the phone finished, Anthony cut him off.
“It’s none of your business. She’s my wife. Luna faked a terminal illness. just to marry me. I must grant her wish!
“I promised to marry her for a month, then divorce her and remarry Karina. Just do your job and make sure Karina never finds out.”
Anthony ended the call, took a deep breath to calm down, and turned to me with an apologetic look.
“I’m sorry, Karina. I’m doing a Spanish project to pay off the company’s debts. What brings you here?”
I froze, tears falling down my cheeks, my heart cracking.
I never thought Anthony’s bankruptcy was just a lie.
Even the divorce was part of his scheme. And I actually fell for his bullshit, thinking he was doing it for my good.
Anthony panicked at the sight of my tears. “What’s going on, Karina? Sorry to put you through all this.”
He held me tight as usual, but all I felt was chill.
“Karina, are you upset because I sent you the divorce agreement this morning?
“Don’t worry. I’m not really leaving you. I just don’t want you to suffer with me. Once I get back on my feet, we’ll remarry, okay?”

Seeing no trace of guilt in Anthony’s eyes, I felt heartbroken.
If I hadn’t heard it with my own ears, I never would’ve believed he could do something so absurd for another woman.
“Anthony. I’m carrying your baby.”
Tears welled in my eyes as my hand instinctively rested on my belly.
There was already a life growing inside me.
Anthony, how could you?
I wanted to scream that I spoke Spanish.
But when I met his cold, indifferent gaze, every question I had dissolved on my tongue.
“Karina, I’m doing this for your own good. I don’t want to be a burden to you or our baby. Please, just listen to me.”
Bitterness rose in my throat like poison. But I forced a smile and lowered my head. “Okay.”
Anthony froze for a second, clearly not expecting me to agree so quickly. Then a flash of joy crossed his face.
He took my hand and tugged me toward the stairs, his voice filled with
urgency.
“The courthouse’s still open. Let’s go file for divorce right now.”
