Chapter 2
Seeing how anxious Anthony was, I couldn’t say a word.
I closed my eyes, letting the tears flow down my cheeks.
What did divorce have to do with bankruptcy?
He said it was for my own good, but in reality, it was for Luna Neal.
Luna was the woman he truly loved.
He pretended to be bankrupt and asked for a divorce. It was just an excuse he made for his cheating.
The divorce process went quickly.
My heart was broken. I used to think we would be together forever, but I didn’t expect that our relationship would end so soon.
Anthony seemed not to notice my emotions, gently touching my head with a smile. ‘Don’t worry, it’s not a real divorce.
“During this time, just wait for me at home. I’ll come to you later, okay?”
No, Anthony.
I watched him leave, clutching the divorce certificate in my hand.
Anthony, there was no fake divorce.
There would be no remarriage too.
After Anthony left, I didn’t go home. Instead, I went to the hospital for an abortion.
While waiting in line at the hospital, I made a phone call.
“Prof. Hunter, I want to go abroad and join your translation team.”
My professor, Albert Hunter, was surprised when he heard it. “That’s great, Karina. We really need an excellent translator like you. You should go abroad earlier. When can you come? I’ll pick you up!”
“I need to get a visa and my passport. It will take about two weeks.”
“No problem. Just call me when you’re ready. Welcome to join us, Karina. I really hope you can work in our team.”
After hanging up, I felt a bit relieved.
Back then, for the sake of being with Anthony, I turned down Albert’s advice to work abroad.
Everyone around me felt regretful for me, but I didn’t regret it at all.
My parents passed away early, and it was Anthony who accompanied me through the tough days, so I was particularly dependent on him.
When faced with the choice between staying in the US with Anthony and going abroad to pursue my career, I didn’t hesitate to choose to marry him.
But in exchange, I got endless deception.
The doctor called my name, and I snapped back to reality, walking into the operating room.
Soon, the little life in my womb was gone.
Walking out of the operating room, I felt empty for a long time.
I never thought that my relationship with Anthony would end like this.
Just as I was about to leave the hospital, I saw a familiar figure rushing in.
Anthony was holding Luna and running into the ward.
His clothes were disheveled, and there was blood seeping from Luna’s leg.
I looked over in confusion.
I heard the doctor say, “Your young people should be more moderate. Didn’t you know your girlfriend was pregnant?”
Both Anthony and I were stunned.
“Are you pregnant, Luna?”
Luna blushed. “I was going to surprise you later, but who knew you…would do it so hard!”
She shyly punched Anthony in the chest.
Anthony excitedly hugged her.
I forced a smile, unconsciously touching my own belly.
There was once a child of Anthony’s too.
Just as I was about to leave, Luna’s voice came, “Karina, why are you in the hospital?”
I paused, and Anthony looked over.
A flicker of panic flashed in his eyes. “Karina, what are you doing in the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?”
He reached out to pull me, but I stepped back, creating some distance between us.
“It’s nothing, just a relapse.”
I didn’t say much. After all, I was about to leave.
The marriage was over, and there was no point in further entanglement.
Anthony’s hand hung in mid–air, feeling a bit off.
“Karina, don’t get me wrong. Luna has a stomachache, and I’m just bringing her to the hospital for a check–up.”
“It’s okay. I have to go to work, so I’ll leave first. Goodbye, Mr. Conway.”
