Chapter 157
She constantly felt someone was out to harm her, seeing everyone as a threat.
But Sarah sensed there was more to it than just the kidnapping.
“After Mia was kidnapped, I searched for a long time. When I finally found her, she was like that day she had her episode –
completely unhinged, not even recognizing me. She was broken for days, crying in terror every night,” Zachary explained.
Sarah’s brows furrowed. “What exactly happened? Was Mia…”
like the
Zachary gave a resigned smile. “No, nothing like that. She witnessed them torturing people, heard the screaming, saw blood
everywhere. She told her therapist that when she closed her eyes, all she could see was blood – the whole world turned red. Later,
she had a complete breakdown, was unconscious for days. When she woke up, she’d forgotten everything. But she remained
sensitive. I know she never truly recovered.”
So that was it….
No wonder Mia was so timid. “Mr. Reynolds, Mia’s mind must have instinctively chosen to forget that incident. I know what to do
now.
She had asked Zachary before, but he hadn’t told her, probably having his concerns.
Outside her apartment building, as she was about to get out, Zachary caught her wrist. “Wait.”
Sarah sat back down, looking at him puzzled. “Mr. Reynolds?”
Zachary handed her a box. “This is for you.”
“It’s your birthday, not mine,” she said, startled.
“It’s a thank–you gift,” he smiled softly.
Sarah looked at his earnest expression, his determined gaze, her heart pounding.
She took the box and was about to rush inside but stopped at the entrance. Checking the time- 11:55 PM.
She turned around and walked back.
Zachary lowered the car window, and she began to sing, “Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday to you…”
In that moment, everything else seemed to vanish, leaving only her.
“That’s my thank–you gift.”
With that, she hurried upstairs with the box.
Zachary left the window down for a long while, his mind filled with the image of Sarah singing.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered before finally driving away.
Inside, Sarah opened Zachary’s gift – another bracelet, even more beautiful than the one she was wearing
She didn’t know how to process their conversation in the car.
And his words at the gala – had he really admitted to liking her?
He must have!
Yet she dared not respond. How could she deny her racing heart when she was so close to Zachary?
Every moment he stood before her at the gala, every time he remembered those little details about her, she couldn’t deny being
moved.
Below her apartment, in the garden, a pair of eyes had witnessed everything.
James had come right after dinner, watching Zachary give Sarah a gift, hearing her sing him happy birthday.
All his suspicions were confirmed Zachary’s interest was genuine.
Why would the golden bachelor of the East Coast fall for her? She had no redeeming qualities!
She used to be interesting, but after marrying him, she became dull, like so many obedient wives – a carbon copy, even in her personality is gentle and virtuous. No matter how he treated her, she would still sweetly make his breakfast the next day.
But was that really the truth?
James stared obsessively at Sarah’s window, the light still on, unable to control himself.
