At the university, Sarah received an email from Jane Lawrence in Milan. Since Jane had reviewed her paper, they’d frequently exchanged emails discussing psychological research..
This email was about publishing her paper. Jane believed her research could be published in the Psychology Journal Sarah had considered this before but had abandoned her career and prospects after marriage, leaving everything unfinished.
Now, with Jane’s suggestion, she was reconsidering
She had barely written a few words when Lucy burst in with Mrs. Chancer and Charlotte following.
“Sarah! Did you call the police on my brother?” Lucy slammed her hand on the desk aggressively.
Sarah calmly saved her document. “I’m working. Please leave!”
“You little tramp! Release my son immediately! Marrying you was the worst misfortune- first you ruined my daughter’s life, now my son’s!” Mrs. Chancer pointed accusingly at her face.
Sarah laughed coldly. “Mrs. Chancer, if you don’t leave, I’ll call security!”
“Ha! Perhaps you’ve forgotten – our family is on the university board.”
Charlotte spoke tearfully, “Miss Sanders, I know you’re still upset about what happened before. If you hate me, I can stay away forever, but please release him. Even though you’re divorced, there must still be some feelings there.”
Sarah looked at her steadily, emphasizing each word, “Charlotte, you’re mistaken. Your husband and I have no connection, no feelings whatsoever. I called the police because he’s harassed me several times.”
“Lies! My brother hates you why would he harass you? You’re the one harassing him, aren’t you? Using this to blackmail him. You’re truly vicious,” Lucy accused.
Mrs. Chancer’s face twisted uglily. “Exactly! It’s ridiculous. My son would never harass someone like you. Don’t flatter yourself! James only loves Charlotte, always has, always will!”
“This isn’t my concern. If he didn’t break in, the police will sort it out. If James can explain himself, he’ll be released. Besides, with the Chancer family’s influence, surely this small matter isn’t beyond your abilities?” Sarah’s eyes flashed coldly.
Though unsure of James’s motives, she was certain yesterday’s incident alone wouldn’t keep him detained. Something else must
have happened.
Or perhaps he was already released but hadn’t gone home.
Her hint wasn’t lost on Charlotte and Mrs. Chancer, who exchanged knowing looks.
