Chapter 8
Ashton trembled. He rushed forward and grabbed my sleeve, trying to explain himself.
“No, Jenny. I didn’t think that way. I truly realized I’ve fallen in love with
you.
“These three years have made you an irreplaceable part of my life.”
Whether he was being truthful or not, his love now felt like a burden to me. I no longer hoped for it.
I shut the door in his face.
Ever since my mom cut ties with him, the smart lock password had been changed. After a few beeping error sounds at the door, everything went quiet.
Ashton stood outside. Once he realized I wouldn’t open the door, he left, dejected.
But since then, he kept appearing at my doorstep.
Sometimes he’d stand there all day. Sometimes he’d drop off gifts and leave.
Those gifts were all the things I’d wanted during our three–year marriage, but he had refused to buy.
I couldn’t have them back then.
Now, I don’t care for them.
Everything I once longed for, I threw into the trash.
After Ashton saw the gifts I’d thrown away, he never brought any more.
But what I didn’t expect was that, in order to get back together with me, he shamelessly went to find my mom.
He clings to her arm, tears streaming down.
“Sarah, please talk to Jenny for me. I miss her so much. Please ask her to remarry me, Sarah.
“I’ll treat Jenny wholeheartedly from now on. I won’t even look at another woman! I’m begging you, Sarah. Please help me talk to Jenny…”
My mom was so furious she slapped him twice and shouted, “Still want to remarry her?! You wasted three years of her life–do you want to waste her whole life too?!
“Ashton, you’re a piece of trash! Jenny was young and didn’t know any better, but what about you? You grew up watching her–how could you bring yourself to do it?! Ashton, you’re a monster!
“If I’d known you’d turn out like this, I never would’ve agreed when my parents brought you home from the orphanage! Get out! Stay the hell out of my sight, or you’ll regret it! Get lost!”
As Ashton was leaving, he happened to run into me and Hugo coming
back.
He froze, eyes turning red immediately.
Like a madman, he yanked me away from Hugo, not letting him touch me.
Then he suddenly lashed out, starting a fight with Hugo.
In the end, I had to use a lot of strength to separate them.
Ashton looked at the way I was caring for Hugo and seemed to realize something. His eyes were red as he questioned me, “Jenny, when you married him back then, it wasn’t just to spite me, was it? You already loved him, didn’t you?”
He let out a bitter laugh, full of pain, and continued, “No wonder you were so eager to divorce me! Turns out you were just like Cecilia, you already had someone lined up!”
Hugo wouldn’t let anyone insult me. Hearing that, veins bulged on his neck in anger.
He grabbed Ashton by the collar and shouted, “Ashton, watch your mouth! What do you mean, ‘already had someone lined up“? You’re the one who cheated first! You and Jenny were married for three years–did you even fulfill a single duty as her husband?
“She’s a doctor, working overtime late into the night, and still had to come home and wash your clothes and cook your meals! And during that car accident, Jenny’s leg was broken and she couldn’t move, but you didn’t even look at her–you ran to save Cecilia, who wasn’t even hurt! If I hadn’t been there, Jenny would’ve died!
“There was such a loud explosion–don’t tell me you didn’t hear it?!”
Those words stunned Ashton.
His expression looked pained as he stared blankly at me, two lines of tears streaming down his face.
“I didn’t know… I didn’t know your leg was broken…”
He stepped forward, trying to hug me.
I took a step back, putting distance between us.
There was no warmth left in my gaze toward him.
Ashton asked me, “Jenny, is there really no way we can start over? I was wrong—this time, I’ll treat you well.”
I shook my head firmly and said, “No. I don’t need you anymore, Ashton.”
