Chapter 6
Caleb’s sarcasm didn’t bother me at all. I just felt bored.
“I don’t need your apology. Just understand one thing–we’re finished.”
With that, I ended the call, took out the SIM card, and threw both the phone and the card into the trash.
It was already 11:00 p.m. when the banquet wrapped up.
My high school best friend, whom I hadn’t seen in years, texted me to grab a late–night drink.
I quickly went home, changed into a form–fitting dress, and excitedly headed out.
I reached the jazz bar at 1:30 a.m.
As I was about to cheer my third Martini with my friend, someone angrily snatched my drink from behind.
I turned around instinctively to see Caleb’s dark expression.
Before I could ask why he was there, he grabbed my arm and pulled me out of my seat without saying a word.
“How can you drink? You’re pregnant and due any day! How dare you-”
He stopped abruptly and stared at my stomach for a long time.

After a moment, his gaze lifted to meet my eyes.
“Whitney, where is the child?”
When I stayed quiet, he clenched his fists so hard that his whole body started trembling.
His eyes were bloodshot, and he asked again, “Where’s our child?”
I looked at him calmly and answered, “The child is gone.”
My simple words froze him in place.
He looked pale, stumbling backward and muttering, “Impossible… How is this possible?”
Seeing Caleb so lost and disoriented, I couldn’t help but sigh.
Men always seemed to put on a show.
Eight months ago, I discovered I was pregnant. I immediately took the test and told Caleb.
My honest confession and trepidation were met with a long silence from him, followed by a question I would never forget.
“Whitney, are you sure the child is mine?”
At the jazz bar, as I was getting ready to leave with my best friend, Caleb marched up and grabbed my wrist tightly, not letting go.
His eyes were bloodshot with anger.
“Whitney, I need the truth about the child, or I’ll never let you go.”
Five minutes later, we were sitting in a black car that was parked in a secluded corner of the underground garage.
Caleb leaned forward, trying to buckle my seatbelt, but I pulled away impatiently.
“If you want answers, ask here. I don’t have time to go anywhere else.”
He was momentarily taken aback, his face showing hurt.
He pulled his hand back and coldly asked, “How did you lose the child?”
I responded with a meaningful smile, “What do you think?”
After a brief pause, Caleb’s expression softened with regret.
“If you had stayed when we encountered the snakes, and I had taken you to the hospital, maybe our child would still be here.
“Whitney, you’re too stubborn.”

After hearing that, I became more convinced that my decision to end. the pregnancy was the right one.
“Caleb, you’re wrong. The child wasn’t lost at your house.”
I stared at him expressionlessly and replied coolly, “I asked the doctor to abort the child. You were there before the surgery.”
Caleb scowled and sneered in anger.
“Whitney, do you think I’m dumb enough to believe such an absurd lie and break up with you as you wish?”
I didn’t bother to argue further. I just opened my phone, found the medical records and billing details, and showed them to him.
As he looked at the information on my phone, his face turned pale, his eyes filled with despair.
He asked, “Why are you doing this?”
I answered calmly, “Because I’m tired of it.”
