Chapter 11 Sudden Interest
Though finding Sephora shrewd, Lowell agreed to her terms without hesitation.
Sephora was slightly surprised by his decisiveness. Soon, she snapped back to reality.
“About the contract details…”
She interrupted Lowell before he could finish, “That’s none of my
business.
“Talk to Seymour.”
With that, she left without looking back.
Lowell’s interest was piqued. He curved his lips while looking at her retreating figure, lost in thought for a long time.
Even he didn’t know why he’d be so interested in her–after all, they had just met a few times.
Sephora had wanted to leave right after sending Xavier the gift and go to the plaza for some racing.
But her mood was totally ruined after Bridgette’s stunt at the party.
She didn’t want to expose her true identity as Philomel at all, and she blamed it all on Bridgette. If it weren’t for Bridgette, she would have been able to leave already.

Now, she wasn’t in the mood for racing at all and went straight home.
Pushing open the door, she saw Christine on the couch. Though she wasn’t exactly attached to Christine and Gerald, basic courtesy was
necessary.
“I’m back,” she said to Christine.
Hearing her voice, Christine looked up at her.
“You’re back, Sephie. Have you eaten? Do you want me to go heat up something for you?”
Though Christine had issues with Sephora’s temper and way of doing things, she was still Sephora’s mother and couldn’t stand seeing Sephora suffer.
After all, Sephora had suffered for sixteen years far away from home. She was always filled with guilt whenever she thought of this, and as she said this, she stood up to go into the kitchen.
Her concern made Sephora feel warm.
Sephora had eaten a few slices of cake at the party. Besides, after what had happened, she no longer had an appetite.
“No need, Mom. I’ve eaten.”
After these past few days, she knew Christine’s concerns for her real, so she no longer resisted calling Christine “Mom” that much.

Hearing this, Christine stopped in her tracks.
“Where did you go today?” Christine said, trying to bond with Sephora.

“I came t
a party today to help deliver a gift for Seymour.”
Sephora briefly recounted what had happened today.
But she didn’t tell Christine she was Philomel because she didn’t think
Christine would believe her.
“You ate at the party?” Christine asked.
“Yes.”
Looking at her, Christine was skeptical. Who would attend a party in a down jacket and without any makeup?
Given Sephora’s outfit, she’d probably get kicked out before making it to the main hall.
Though Christine was suspicious, she didn’t ask Sephora anything and remained calm.
To her, since Sephora’s adoptive parents lived in a small town, they wouldn’t possibly rub elbows with any elites. So, instead of attending a party, maybe Sephora just went out to wander around and didn’t want to be nagged.
Christine couldn’t help but frown.
She thought, “Sure enough, kids shouldn’t be raised in the countryside. Sephora actually lies to me!”
At this, she was no longer in the mood to chat with Sephora.
Keenly noticing Christine’s expression, which turned icy in a split second, Sephora was puzzled, not knowing how she had upset. Christine again.

The warmth she had just felt dissipated quickly.
Since Christine was upset, she might as well stay out of Christine’s
view.
“If this is all, I’m going back to my room. I’m a bit tired.”
With that, she walked back to her room and closed the door.
Christine frowned again as she watched Sephora’s back.
She thought, “I gotta get Sephora a teacher to teach her etiquette and get rid of those bad habits she developed during those years in that small town.
“No matter what, Sephora is my flesh and blood. I can’t stand others ridiculing me for having a rude daughter.”
Christine attached great importance to etiquette and manners, which could be proved by the fact that she insisted on having Bridgette learn all kinds of musical instruments and etiquette.
As she was lost in thought, the sound of the door opening snapped her back to reality.
Looking up, she saw Bridgette in a gown with a sour expression.
If Sephora had come back in a gown, Christine would have believed her story of attending a party. But in a down jacket? No way. Sephora was such a bad liar.
“You’re back, Bridie,” Christine said with a smile.
Though they weren’t related by blood, she had raised Bridgette for sixteen years, who had turned out to be exactly the kind of daughter

she wanted, so she was pretty satisfied with Bridgette.
“Yes,” Bridgette said.
“Have you eaten, Bridie?”
“Yeah.”
“What’s up, Bridie? Are you not feeling well? You look terrible.”
“I’m fine, Mom. I’m just a bit tired. I’m going back to my room for some rest,” Bridgette said.
She wanted to tell Christine what had happened at the party today, but it all happened because she had switched Sephora’s gift.
Christine would be let down after knowing what she had done.
Besides, a lot had happened within just one day, which was too much for her to take. She had always thought Sephora grew up in a small town. How come Seymour, Sephora’s brother, was friends with Xavier? How come Sephora was Philomel, the famous calligrapher?
“Mom, do you know anything about Sephora’s adoptive parents?” Bridgette stopped and turned around to look at Christine.
Christine said, “Not much. All I know is they’ve been living in a small town these years.”
“Do they have other children?” Bridgette pressed on.
“I think… Yeah, I think they have three other children. What is it? Why are you suddenly interested in them?”
