Chapter 1 Pleading
To save her sister’s life. Charlotte Townsend had no choice but to sleep with her sister’s fiancé.
Charlotte’s sister, Danielle Townsend, had never smiled at her. Yet now, Danielle begged Charlotte to give birth to a baby whose marrow might save her own life.
Charlotte had never stepped out of line since childhood, and she had a boyfriend she loved deeply, so she declined Danielle’s request again‘ and again.
Until death clawed at Danielle’s throat, and their aging father pleaded with Charlotte, “Charlotte, please help Danielle. As long as you say yes, she’ll break up with Malcolm and step aside just so that you can bear the child.”
Charlotte had always yearned for her father’s love. She knew very well that he didn’t love her, but under his pleading gaze, she couldn’t bring herself to say no whatsoever.
Marlene Townsend, Danielle’s mother, pressured through tears. “Charlotte, think about it. Who took you in back then? Who paid for your mother’s treatment when she was seriously ill? It’s time that you repay me.”
Charlotte realized she had no choice.
At night, she texted Humberto Caldwell coldly, “Humberto, let’s break up.”

She turned off her phone and changed her number before he could. reply.
Within that very month, Danielle broke off her engagement to Malcolm Bautista after years of being engaged.
Then Malcolm and Charlotte entered a brief romantic relationship.
It was the second time they were in bed.
The first time was a nightmare for Charlotte. The pain was unbearable for her, and he lost all interest because of her resistance. He got it over with and comforted her perfunctorily, putting an end to it.
Luckily, the second time was much better. She was no longer afraid of the pain, and he obviously sensed it. They synced gradually.
She thought, “So, this is how it feels to lose control.”
Clutching the sheets while sitting in bed, she could clearly hear her pounding heartbeat. She asked timidly, “Can I take a shower?”
Marlene had said not taking a shower would improve the chances of getting pregnant, but Charlotte felt awful because she was drenched in
sweat.
Malcolm had been sitting by the bed in silence. After quite a long time. he answered, “Yes, if you want to.”
A month ago, he had left directly after getting out of bed, but this time, he sat by the bed, answering her question.
Charlotte knew nothing about sex. She dropped her head, not wanting him to catch a glimpse of her flushed face.

Then she asked, “How many more times do we have to do this?”
“We’ll test again in half a month.”
Another half a month? She didn’t know how much longer she could. endure this. Every cell in her body was screaming, hoping she’d get lucky this time.
Then he said, “Thank you.”
It was like they were business associates who had just closed a deal.
“If you need my help in the future, let me know.”
Hearing this, Charlotte looked up. Upon seeing his face devoid of any emotion, she thought, “He must love Danielle so much. Why else would he agree to such a ridiculous arrangement?”
Nodding, she responded to him while gazing at his face in a daze. “I just want Danielle to get better.”
“Me too,” he said. Then he asked, ever the gentleman, “Do you need a ride?”
She shook her head immediately. “No… I can go home by myself.”
Of course, he didn’t force her. He was mature and wise enough to give her the freedom to do whatever she wanted.
After walking out of the hotel alone, Charlotte felt dizzy under the scorching sunlight. She managed to go home, and Marlene promptly brought her a bowl of medicine, urging her to drink it. Though unsure what it was, Charlotte drank it anyway under Marlene’s intent gaze.
Marlene asked, “How many times?”

Charlotte was stunned.
After a few seconds, she said, “Once.”
“Only once? That wasn’t enough at all. You spent an entire night together.”
Charlotte felt weird. It was so weird.
Marlene continued, “You only did it with him once the last time, and that was a month ago. And it’s only once again? At this rate, how will you ever get pregnant?”
Marlene was eager to see Charlotte giving birth. She and Charlotte’s‘ father were too old to have another child, so she pinned all her hopes. on Charlotte.
Charlotte didn’t know how many times they’d have to do it to make Marlene happy. All she knew was that they had only done it twice in these two months.
Marlene pressed on, saying, “Charlotte, you gotta try more than once. tonight for better odds. One time’s not gonna do it at all.”
Charlotte felt utterly uneasy.
After a few seconds, she said, “We didn’t continue after he was done.”
“You never slept with Humberto before? Tell me. Is it because you don’t know how? I’ll talk to Malcolm,” Marlene said and turned to leave.
Charlotte felt exposed and ashamed as she pictured the scene where Marlene talked to Malcolm about this.
