Chapter 23 Don’t Be Afraid
“Are you sure?” Malcolm asked.
The doctor answered with great certainty, “Yes.”
Hearing that, Charlotte immediately looked at Malcolm.
Yet, Malcolm looked composed and then asked without hesitation, “Does she need to stay in the hospital?”
“No need. It’s not serious. She just needs to take some medicine.”
Malcolm remained calm. “OK.”
The doctor left shortly. Charlotte didn’t expect to see that coming.
It turned out she didn’t get pregnant.
Malcolm walked to her. “The doctor said it was just a stomach flu.”
Charlotte felt all her energy drain away, overwhelmed by grave disappointment.
She was still not pregnant…
It took her quite a while to collect herself. Then, she faltered, “Sorry. I thought I was… Never thought it was a mistake.”
They were surrounded by the unsettling wails of babies.
As to this misunderstanding, Malcolm just said, “Let’s get out first.”

Charlotte still stayed motionless, but a long time later, she still
struggled to drag her feet, following him outside. Yet, her legs were unconsciously weak. All of a sudden, she fell to the ground. Malcolm hurriedly pulled her to his arms. Startled, Charlotte raised her head to look at him.
However, the moment he held her, a wave of relief washed over her, melting away the chaos of the past days.
Staying in his arms, she said, “I’m not pregnant. What should we do?”
They looked each other in the eye. Tears welled up in her red eyes. She looked severely sorry.
Malcolm stared at her silently and frowned. “Even if you aren’t pregnant later, it won’t be your fault. Let nature take its course.”
Charlotte was entirely worn out. The whole check–in and waiting process had exhausted her.
Malcolm held her tightly in his arms and put his hand on her head. He whispered in her ear, “Don’t be afraid.”
Charlotte pressed her face against his arms quietly.
From a distance, they looked like a couple hugging each other intimately.
However, that wasn’t the case.
Leaning on him for strength, Charlotte rose unsteadily to her feet and let her hands slip from his shoulders. Meanwhile, Malcolm grabbed her wrists, making her fingers tremble a bit.
She curled up her body but didn’t move a bit. She said softly, “I feel a

lot better. I can walk myself.”
Malcolm didn’t pay attention to that. Instead, he held her hand and took her away from the corridor.
When they returned to the car in the parking lot, Charlotte finally withdrew her hand from his and Malcolm also released his grip.
Both their hands were slightly sweaty.
Malcolm started the engine and drove the car away.
When the car arrived at the school gate, Malcolm said, “Remember to take the medicine.”
“OK.” Charlotte replied. A while later, she said politely, “Thank you for today.”
Malcolm said lightly, “Hmm.”
It seemed that his gentleness shown for her in the hospital earlier was just an illusion.
Charlotte pushed open the door. However, the moment she got out of the door, a voice came from behind her, saying, “Charlotte.”
Hearing that, Charlotte immediately looked back. Humberto was standing five meters away from her. The moment she saw him, she felt as if struck by a surge of wind and stared at him motionlessly.
Humberto trotted to Charlotte. His brows furrowed. At first, he only spotted that she got out of a black car and failed to recognize whose car it was. But when he got closer, she found it was Malcolm’s car.
Humberto arrived at the car and said, “Mr. Bautista?”

Malcolm rolled down the window and looked at Humberto.
Humberto said with his face full of smiles, “I didn’t expect it would be you. I thought I was mistaken.”
Malcolm replied in an amiable tone as if treating a junior, “You’ve just come back from work?”
Humberto said with a smile, “Yes, I’m here to pick up Charlotte. I’ve also got something to pack.”
Malcolm nodded. “OK, I’ll get out of your hair then.”
Humberto asked, “Did you just drive Charlotte to school?”
Charlotte fixed her eyes on Humberto, her heart stuttering.
Malcolm also took a glance at her and then said, “Yes, I did.”
“Thank you for taking care of Charlotte.”
Humberto still thought of himself as Charlotte’s boyfriend and expressed his thanks to Malcolm. Yet, he didn’t notice the subtle change in Charlotte’s and Malcolm’s faces after he said that.
“It’s OK,” Malcolm said with a cold look.
Charlotte stood there for a long time before she finally said, “Humberto, why did you…”
Now, she’d always subconsciously avoid Humberto.
She figured if she had thorns, she’d definitely be a ball–up hedgehog right now.
Humberto walked to her. “Natalia told me you weren’t feeling well. So, I came to the schred for you. Never knew I’d meet you at the school gale to, are you still not feeling well?”
Humberto found that she looked quite pale and weak. He felt so worried and reached out to feel her forehead. “Are you having a fever?”
The moment Humberto’s hand lay on Charlotte’s forehead, Malcolm’s gaze also fell on them
Charlotte felt panicked all of a sudden. She took a step backward unconsciously “I’m fine. It’s just a cold. I’ve taken some medicine.”
Humberto grabbed her hand. “No way. I must take you to the hospital.”
Feeling her hand was trembling, Humberto frowned, “What on earth is wrong with you? You’re cold all over.”
Malcolm interrupted, “I’ve taken her to the hospital and got the medicine. She’s got a stomach flu and a cold. Just let her go back and get some rest.”
Humberto heaved a sigh in relief, but still didn’t release his grip. He replied, “Thank you, Mr. Bautista. I’ll take Charlotte back to her dorm then.”
Malcolm glimpsed Charlotte and then said, “OK.”
The next second, he withdrew his eyes from the two of them and rolled up the window.
