Chapter 6
He left Caroline alone and hurried off.
Caroline watched silently as he vanished from sight. Behind her, at group of people was cleaning up the chaos left behind.
With that worried expression he had just now, something must have happened to Kelly again, right?
Caroline suddenly laughed and pulled out her phone. When she opened it, as expected, that post had been updated again: “I have a fever, and he still chose to stay with me, leaving his beloved behind. again.”
Reading the words ‘his beloved‘, Caroline’s smile widened.
As she chuckled, tears began to fall down her cheeks.
His beloved?
What kind of beloved was she?
What kind of beloved would let a mistress torment her like this?
Caroline was taken back to Azure Bay by the driver, and he didn’t return that entire night.
For several days following, Joshua also didn’t come back.
Eventually, Caroline discovered through inquiries that Kelly had managed to slip away when security was at its weakest at AquaSky Estate.
Joshua had been searching for her for an entire week without any
success.
His pursuit of Kelly’s whereabouts delayed all preparations for his wedding with Caroline.
It wasn’t until Caroline’s birthday that Joshua finally returned home.
When Caroline saw him, he seemed dejected. It was absurd that her partner was preoccupied with another woman’s disappearance.
Before lighting the candles on the birthday cake by the dining table, Joshua masked his distraction with a smile as he assisted her in lighting them.
“Carol, make a wish,” he encouraged.
“Sweetheart, wish for anything. I’ll make it come true for you.”
Throughout the years, they had developed an unspoken tradition. While others believed that speaking their wishes out loud might prevent them from coming true, Caroline would always voice hers, and Joshua would insist on hearing them.
No matter what she wished for, he promised to fulfill it, even if it meant reaching for the stars.
Caroline forced a smile, but her eyes lacked any happiness.
She looked at him with a blank expression and said, “I wish you would stop seeing Kelly”
Joshua was shocked by what he heard.
Caroline kept her gaze on him. “Since she ran away, there’s no point in
searching for her anymore. I’m exhausted and want to move on.”
Her words were met with silence.
After a moment, Joshua embraced her, speaking in a firm tone that suggested he was concealing something. “Carol, what she’s gone through isn’t enough. Once I’ve avenged you, I’ll let her go.”
Despite everything, he was still determined to find Kelly.
Caroline suddenly felt a wave of self–pity.
Just then, Andrew burst in, panting.
“Mr. Kimble, there’s news about Kelly!”
Joshua’s grip on Caroline’s hand tightened before he released it entirely.
“Carol, stay home and wait for me. I’ll return soon,” he said, turning to leave with Andrew.
Caroline was once more left alone.
The birthday candles on the dining table had melted away. Watching them, she felt as though it wasn’t just the candles being burned by the heat, but her heart as well.
Otherwise, why did it ache so intensely?
Her phone buzzed with a notification–the post had been updated again.
With a sense of detachment, Caroline tapped to open it.
“I dropped a hint about my location on his beloved’s birthday. As expected, he eagerly left her to come to me.”
Over the past few days, Kelly has been consistently sharing her updates.
She has no intention of escaping.
Instead, she’s using this tactic to make Joshua realize how important
she is, hoping to see him abandon Caroline and return to her repeatedly
And each time. he has gone back to her.
As she looked at the words that were becoming increasingly blurry before her, a sudden wave of pain surged over her.
Sitting in her wheelchair, she breathed rapidly, her fingers gripping the edge until they turned pale.
Quickly, she returned to her room, took the medicine bottle from the cloth bag beside her wheelchair, and with trembling hands, poured out two antidepressant pills.
