Chapter 9
Caroline didn’t explain, she just hung up the phone and sat numbly in place for a long time.
She was so tired that she couldn’t go on anymore.
She had always wanted to marry Joshua, the one who had once been completely devoted to her.
However, that person had already disappeared.
He would never come back again.
Time passed day by day, quickly, and the wedding of the two was approaching.
But he was busy accompanying Kelly at the hospital every day, as if he had completely forgotten about this matter.
Caroline, on the other hand, seemed very considerate and never brought it up herself.
Until the day before the wedding.
She suddenly made a phone call and invited Joshua to the rooftop of their high school building.
“Why did you suddenly decide to come here?”
Joshua carried her upstairs while asking.
Caroline looked pale and said, “The wedding is tomorrow. I want to
come back and take a look.”
She deliberately ignored his stiffness when mentioning the wedding, as if she had never noticed.
Pushing open the door to the rooftop, Joshua discovered that there was actually a round table set up with steak and candles on top.
Caroline looked quietly at this familiar place, “Joshua, do you still remember? It was here where you confessed your love to me.”
That year. 18–year–old Joshua cornered her on the rooftop.
“Didn’t you say that I had to catch a hundred butterflies before you would agree to be with me? I did it.”
After speaking, the young man smiled and threw his backpack, releasing numerous colorful butterflies from inside.
In a flutter of butterflies, he trembled and solemnly kissed her.
“Carol, be with me, and I will love you forever.”
Perhaps it was also recalling the past, Joshua’s gaze became even more tender and affectionate.
He placed Caroline on the chair in front of the dining table and kissed her forehead, saying, “Carol, I will love you forever.”
His look of deep affection seemed as if nothing had happened between them before.
It was as if he had never held another woman’s hand and said, “As long as you wake up, I won’t get married.”
Caroline looked at the person in front of her and never knew that his acting skills were so good.
She didn’t say anything, just whispered, “Let’s eat.”
The two sat facing each other.
Looking down at the entire school from the rooftop, it brought back many memories for the two of them.
“I remember, in the past, when we had morning exercises, I couldn’t run, and you would secretly carry me in the line. Eventually, the teacher found out and made you run ten more laps as punishment. You even took a horn and deliberately protested against him, saying that not only today, but also tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, you would still carry me and run for a lifetime.”
“One time, you got injured but still wanted to play basketball. I got angry and we argued. I didn’t talk to you for a few days. You couldn’t take it anymore, so you risked getting caught by the dormitory manager and came to my dormitory late at night to throw stones downstairs. You brought back some small wontons bought by climbing over the wall to make peace.”
“When we were taking the college entrance exam, you ranked first in the grade, while I ranked one hundredth. In the end, you and I chose the same major. You said, instead of going to Harvard University, you would rather see me every day.”
She recalled one thing after another from the past, her voice always calm, as calm as a still pond.
Joshua, however, did not notice her emotions and just smiled, saying “Yeah, having to separate from you is more painful than death.”
Caroline tugged at his sleeve and asked hoarsely, “I still have a gift to give you.”
He hesitated for a moment, his expression still gentle but determined: “I’ll be right back.”
The sleeves slid away from his hands, and Caroline watched him go downstairs like that.
Joshua, oh Joshua.
You once said that no one is as important as me.
But now, for Kelly, how come you couldn’t even wait for my last gift?
The intense pain in her heart struck Caroline fiercely, causing her vision to blur. Since she stopped taking the medication, she had been enduring this torment every day.
But this couldn’t compare to one thousandth of what Joshua had given her.
Watching his figure disappear completely, Caroline finally closed her eyes and suddenly began to count the time.
“One, two, three…”
“Fifty–six, fifty–seven, fifty–eight…”
It wasn’t until she estimated that Joshua was about to arrive downstairs that she struggled to stand up from the wheelchair.
Then, step by step, he walked unsteadily to the edge of the rooftop. staring intently as the familiar figure appeared below,
Since having her legs amputated, this is the first time Caroline has walked such a long distance with prosthetic limbs.
But not for the sake of survival, but for the sake of death.
She stood unsteadily at the highest point of the rooftop, watching him. hurriedly open the car door, get in, and start the vehicle.
Joshua…
From the age of 16 to 26, you liked me for a full ten years.
What kind of feeling is it to watch the girl you have liked for ten years. die in front of you?
Unfortunately, she would never see this result again.
She didn’t want to know either.
This lifetime was too exhausting.
In the next life, she didn’t want to come back again.
She smiled, closed her eyes, and in the moment the car started, she opened her arms and jumped decisively.
“With a loud bang!”
She fell from a height and landed heavily on Joshua’s car window!
Fresh blood misted a large area of the car windows, followed by a chorus of screams of terror all around.
“Oh, someone jumped off the building, someone died!”
