Chapter 7

After Kyle and Jennifer realized that getting a kidney from relatives was hopeless, they decided to have another child to save Jason.
But they were already getting older, and with Kyle’s long–term smoking and drinking habits, conceiving wasn’t easy.
After several years, Jennifer finally became pregnant again.
By this time, Jason was almost a teenager.
He had already adapted to his weekly dialysis routine and felt he wasn’t much different from normal people.
When he suddenly learned about Jennifer’s pregnancy, Jason had trouble accepting it.
But when Kyle explained that having a second child was to save him, Jason understood.
However, Jennifer gave birth to another boy, named Daniel Hill.
Laura was delighted holding the baby, as if she had given up on Jason and found new hope.
Daniel was unusually well–behaved, never cried at night, smiled at everyone, and could understand simple commands when he was just a few months old.

His first word was “Daddy,” which thrilled Kyle. The family’s attention gradually shifted from Jason to Daniel.
As Daniel grew up, he excelled academically.
Meanwhile, Jason’s condition worsened, and without a kidney transplant, his life was in danger.
Fear of death drove Jason to ask Kyle about the surgery timeline.
Kyle’s smile froze on his face. He thought, “Daniel is so talented, he might go to Harvard someday. Donating a kidney would ruin his future.”
Now the whole family placed their hopes on Daniel, seemingly wishing Jason would pass away soon and no longer burden
them.
Jason, now a teenager, had long noticed their change in attitude.
Everyone only cared about Daniel; he had already been abandoned.
But Jason didn’t dare rebel, as his dialysis expenses were entirely covered by Kyle.
Just when Jason was losing hope, I appeared.

After more than a decade apart, Jason barely recognized me.
He still resented me for refusing to donate my kidney years ago.
“What are you doing here?” Jason said coldly.
I smiled and replied, “You’re my nephew. I missed you and came to take you out for a meal.”
Hearing about a free meal, Jason obediently came with me.
Looking at his pale face, I sighed, “Kyle is so heartless, not even willing to give you a kidney.”
Jason immediately asked, “Weren’t you the one who refused to donate your kidney back then?”
I said, “Silly child, the success rate of kidney matching between non–direct relatives is very low. Your mother and grandmother both did the matching, but Kyle backed out at the last minute. Father–son kidney matching has the highest success rate. If he had been willing, you would have recovered long ago.”
“You can ask the doctor if what I’m saying is true.”
Jason knew nothing about this. He had always thought the kidney matching between him and Kyle had failed.
Trembling, he muttered, “That’s impossible. You’re lying to
me…”

I said, “You can verify it yourself. But I advise you to give up. Kyle only cares about Daniel now.”
