Chapter 15
Chet fastened his seatbelt, pressed the gas pedal, and drove out of the parking lot.
Marissa’s face slowly flushed, just now there seemed to be a different emotion in Uncle Chet’s eyes.
She gently shook her head to shake off this absurd idea from her mind.
“Uncle Chet hasn’t seen me in a long time, he must miss me a lot. Oh, what am I thinking about?”
Chet noticed that Marissa seemed distracted and her face was a bit flushed, so he reached out and gently touched her cheek.
“Why is your face feeling a bit warm? Is the temperature in the car too high?”
Marissa shook her head and hesitantly said, “No, I just… just sat down and haven’t adjusted yet.”
Chet withdrew his hand, opened the armrest box, and handed her the lotus seed soup inside.
“Are you hungry? This was made by Aunt Wang in the morning. I was afraid you didn’t eat anything after getting off the plane, so I brought some over.”
Marissa took it and exclaimed with joy, “I really miss Aunt Wang’s lotus seed soup! The ones bought outside are not as good as hers!”
On the way home, Chet asked her about her life in Los Angeles over the past few years, and Marissa did not hide anything, she answered him.
She said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Uncle Chet, I haven’t been home to see you and my parents for so many years.”
Chet patted her head and comforted her, “We’re family, no need to apologize, just come back.”
He gripped the steering wheel tightly and asked hesitantly, “How was your boyfriend there?”
“How old is he? What does he do for a living? Why did you break up with him?”
Marissa was drinking lotus seed soup when she heard this sentence, and she was stunned for a moment.
“Uncle Chet, why are you suddenly asking these questions?”
Chet gave her a deep look and said, “I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while, but you’ve been avoiding me.”
Marissa fell silent, she understood that Chet cared about her.
However, she couldn’t say Jonathan’s name, and she couldn’t tell him what happened in Los Angeles.
At the moment, Marissa couldn’t avoid the topic again and had to tell a
lie.
“I met him at school, he was twenty–eight, he was a programmer.”
“He was very nice to me, would prepare surprises for me, and even
a ou ajdwes
cooked for me to eat.”
“However, his current job became busier and busier, leaving him with no time to spend with me. Gradually, our feelings faded and we broke
up.”
Marissa paused for a moment, then continued, “We broke up
peacefully, with no other conflicts.”
Chet raised his eyebrows slightly and remained silent.
Marissa stole a few glances at Chet, afraid that he would hear that she was lying.
Fortunately, Chet didn’t ask any more questions, he just said lightly, “It’s better to break up.”
When Marissa got home, she found her parents waiting at the door, and she pouted in dissatisfaction.
“Uncle Chet, you lied to me, Mom and Dad both know now.”
Chet pursed his lips. “You sent back so many packages the other day, both my older brother and sister–in–law know you’re coming home.”
He tapped Marissa’s nose and said with a smile, “Big brother and sister–in–law have been waiting for you at the doorstep these days.”
Marissa felt like crying a little. She knew that if she didn’t want to talk about it, her parents wouldn’t press her for answers.
After getting out of the car, Raelynn Monroe greeted Marissa with a smile, touching her cheek with a look of concern in her eyes.
“Mari, my sweet baby, you finally came home.”
Keaton stood to the side, smiling as he watched her, nodding slightly.
Marissa looked at the three people in front of her and said solemnly, “Dad, Mom, Uncle Chet, I’m back.”
After returning home, Marissa once again felt the love of her family.
Every day after Marissa woke up, she could see many dolls, bags, clothes in the bedroom.
After work, Chet would also bring her milk tea and desserts, to which she would helplessly respond.
“Mom and Dad, don’t buy me any gifts anymore, I don’t lack anything.”
“And Uncle Chet, you don’t need to bring me milk tea anymore. I have grown up, so please don’t treat me like a child.”
Keaton and Raelynn chuckled, “In our parents‘ eyes, you will always be our child.”
