The grand hall was aglow with golden light, draped in silver banners bearing the crest of the Silvana and Aethon Packs. Tonight was the engagement celebration–Maurine’s grand moment. At least, that’s what she thought.
Guests from various allied packs filled the hall, chattering, toasting, and exchanging formalities. Rebecca stood at the entrance, her fingers loosely entwined with Alpha Maximus’s. Dressed in a flowing gown of deep sapphire that shimmered with every step she took, she seemed to glow under the lights Maximus stood beside her like a living monument–tall, sharp–eyed, and undeniably powerful. Maurine’s smile faltered. Her hand, poised mid–air, froze as Elder Kiran approached the stage. She blinked rapidly, as if trying to wake herself from a nightmare.

The room stilled, all eyes now turning as Alpha Lucas strode in from the side doors, dressed in his ceremonial black and silver. He camed himself with the composure of a true alpha, but his expression was unreadable.
He approached the stage casually, hands clasped behind his back.
“No mistake, Maurine,” Lucas said, his voice calm, deadly clear. “You wanted to marry into the Silvana Pack, didn’t you? So, I arranged a union. Elder Kiran is a well–respected leader. He will honor your ambition.”
Maurine’s face drained of all color. “What–what are you saying?” she stammered, eyes darting toward her father, Alpha Rowan.
“Your marriage was arranged for political alliance,” Rowan said with a shrug from his table, sipping his wine like this was all of little consequence. “Silvana is a strong ally Consider this your contribution.”
Maurine trembled with fury. “But–I thought Lucas… I thought you wanted me!”
Lucas stepped closet his jaw tense. “I never wanted you, Maurine. Not truly. I was a fool to like you once in my life.”

And with that, Lucas turned his gaze across the room, locking eyes with Rebecca. She stood still, her eyes narrowing with recognition. Maximus’s hand gripped hers a little tighter, sensing what was coming.

Lucas dropped to his knees, pain etched into every line of his face. “Please. Just tell me if there’s even a sliver of hope left.“)
Rebecca knelt slightly, just enough to meet his eyes.
“I loved you once, Lucas,” she whispered. “But I don’t anymore. I found someone who saw me, cherished me, and fought for me even when he couldn’t speak. You lost me long before tonight.”
She rose and walked away, leaving him on the balcony, frozen. From the shadows, he watched as she returned to the hall, her hand immediately claimed by Maximus. The music rose, and they danced.
She twirled beneath the soft lights, laughter in her voice, her head thrown back in joy. Maximus held her close, his hand firm on her waist his gaze filled with pride. The whole room sow what love looked like–complete, healing, and unshakable.”
