Chapter 16
Julia’s POV
I turned to see Celeste standing, her lips curved into a smile that looked just sweet enough to be sickening. What does she want now?
I didn’t have the patience for this today. I ignored her presence and turned on my heel, walking right past her without sparing a second glance. But just as I took a step forward, she spoke again.
“You should apologize to Alex,” she said and took a step closer.
I froze mid–step, irritation flaring inside me. I turned to face her, my eyebrow arched in disbelief. “What?”
Celeste crossed her hands together, her expression contorting into something that could almost pass for concern. “You know, the security project. Alex is really upset because of it, Julia. He hasn’t been eating properly. He’s barely sleeping. I’m so worried about his health,” she continued, her brows furrowing with that same fake distress.
I stared at her, unable to comprehend how she could stand there with a straight face, spouting this nonsense. Was she serious? Was I really supposed to care? After everything Alex had done, after the mess he’d put me through, I was supposed to feel bad that he was neglecting his meals?
“I know you called off the wedding, but that shouldn’t be the reason you should treat him this way. Remember you once loved him…”
“He is my past now. You should deal with it.” I replied.
“Please don’t let him get depressed.”
I didn’t even try to hide the contempt in my voice. “That sounds like his problem, not mine.” I turned to leave, barely able to contain my frustration.
But suddenly, the moment I walked past Celeste, she suddenly gasped. Before I could react she collapsed to the floor with an exaggerated yelp. Her purse spilled open, items scattering in every direction as she hit the ground.
The few people who were there turned to look but I ignored them. And immediately, a familiar voice broke the silence.
“What the hell is going on here?”
I stiffened in irritation to know it was Alex’s voice.
I turned to see him striding toward us, his cold gaze locking onto me before moving down to Celeste on the floor.
“Celeste?” His brows creased in concern as he moved to her side to help her up.
Celeste let out a soft, pitiful wince of pain and shook her head as if trying to be strong. “It’s nothing, Alex. Julia didn’t mean to…” She trailed off, sneaking a glance at me.
I narrowed my eyes. This woman was unbelievable.
Alex’s cold gaze pinned me in place “You pushed her, didn’t you? You need to apologise to Celeste.”
“Apologize?” I chuckled in disbelief. “I won’t do that.”
Of course, he’d take her side. He always did.
“Say you’re sorry,” he pressed.
I met his stare without flinching “No.”
He took a few steps forward. “Are you serious, Julia? First you won’t take responsibility and now,
I folded my armis. “Take responsibility for what?”
this?”
Alex scoffed. “Don’t play dumb. After I withdrew my investment, there was suddenly a security system failure. And right after that, your financial troubles miraculously disappeared.” He stepped closer. There must be something fishy going on here.”
I stared at him for a second before letting out a short laugh. “You can’t be serious.”
His jaw clenched. “You think this is funny?”
“I think it’s ridiculous,” I corrected. “You’re blaming me for your own poor decisions? If there was a security failure, that’s on you. How is it my fault that you are the one who is bad at investment.

He sneered. “You’re just jealous because I withdrew from your company.”
I raised an eyebrow, smirking. “Jealous? Oh Please.” I chuckled. “What can a failed CEO like you offer to my company?”
My words must have hit a nerve because his entire body looked tense. “You…”
His expression twisted with anger, and before I could react, his hand shot up.
The moment he raised his arm, his fingers curled as if preparing to strike me.
Then Celeste gasped dramatically. “Alex, don’t!” She reached out as if to stop him, her hand grasping his arm. “Please, don’t do this. Don’t let people conclude on what you are not. She’s not worth it.”
But Alex barely spared her a glance. “Move aside, Celeste. You’ll get hurt.”
Celeste hesitated for a moment before reluctantly letting go, her face filled with a mix of worry.
Alex’s arm lifted again, but before he could bring it down on me, a strong hand shot out and grabbed his wrist midair.
Alex’s entire body jerked to a halt. Í blinked, my breath catching in my throat the moment I saw who it was.
Alex turned sharply, his expression moving from fury to shock as he looked at the person who had stopped him.
Silence fell over the space.
