Chapter 29
Julia’s POV
I took out the box, a black little box in a square shape. and held it out to Mr. Samuel as I took a few steps forward.
“I don’t want your gift,” he said gruffly, waving a dismissive hand. His voice held the same coldness he had kept between us for a while now.
“Please,” I pleaded, gripping the box tightly.
The silence stretched for what felt like some seconds and finally, he stepped closer, standing right in front of me.
He went ahead to take the box and then he opened the box. The moment his gaze landed on the object inside, it was a watch, his mood changed into something sad. The watch had a polished gold case with a deep blue surface face, written in Roman numerals, and gold hands. Its leather strap was smooth, still looking like a new watch.
His eyes turned sober. I could see the recognition in his eyes and sadness in his eyes. He touched it, caressing the surface as if trying to remember his past moments.
“This…” His voice was barely above a whisper. His fingers traced the engravings on the back. He took out the watch carefully. His thumb brushed over the glass surface.
“This was Wilson’s,” he murmured, his brows furrowing deeply as he looked up to me. “I gave this to him the year Julison first turned a profit together. He used to carry it everywhere…”
His voice broke, and he inhaled sharply, closing his eyes for a moment, probably remembering his memories with my father. When he looked at me again, his expression was full of sorrow.
In my previous life, all of my father’s belongings were either sold or thrown away by my stepmother, Scarlet. So this time, I found my father’s belongings as quickly as possible, and among them was this pocket watch.
“I know I have hurt you so dearly. I know I am seeing as a prodigal child and I know how much you are disappointed at me but I want to make things right.” I took another step forward.
“I’m no longer going back to Alex. Our chapter closed a long time ago. Please, believe me this time.” I understood Mr. Samuel. Countless times, I would always go back to Alex even after telling him I wouldn’t. He was so disappointed that he found it hard to believe me this time. “Just this once. Give me a chance. For the sake of my father, your friend.”
“Wilson was the best man I knew,” he said. “And I…” He hesitated, his jaw clenching. “I wasn’t there when he needed me most. I should’ve been. He was my friend, and I failed him.”
My own heart aching at the regret in his voice.
“It was never your fault.” I tried to comfort him with my words. And then continued. “We all couldn’t save him. I also didn’t give him the last respect as my father. I know I haven’t been perfect. I know I made mistakes, mistakes that cost me your trust. But I want to make things right, to make my father proud. I cherish the company my father built more than anything. And I need you, Mr. Samuel.”
Silence stretched for some seconds.
“You were my father’s closest friend,” I continued. “And right now… you’re the only father I have. I don’t have anyone else.”
Mr. Samuel’s fingers curled tightly around the watch for sometime and then reached forward and grasped my hand. His grip was strong, wrapping his arms around mine.
“I forgive you, my child.” He added and then took the box from my hands, his fingers brushing against the smooth surface of the watch. It’s okay my child. You are young and younger ones tend to make mistakes. But I’m glad you finally realise it and want to make it up.” He welcomed me into his embrace.
“You remind me of him,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
That was all it took for the tears to spill down my cheeks. I couldn’t hold them back any longer.
Mr. Samuel gave my hand a firm squeeze before pulling away, clearing his throat. He wiped at his eyes quickly, as if embarrassed by his own emotions.
“You shouldn’t cry… I know he is no more but you have his replica sitting next to you.” I teased and he chuckled a small laugh. “Absolutely, he replied.
I sniffled and forced a small smile. “We’ve made up, and that’s something worth celebrating. Let me treat you to a meal. How long has it been

since we had a meal together?,” I offered.
He exhaled, shaking his head. “I already have a guest at home today, my child.”
I nodded in understanding. “Then let’s make another appointment. I’ll be sure to treat you properly next time.” He nodded and then my gaze bore into his. “Thanks for having me around. I should be on my way.” I added.
I stood up, ready to leave and then he spoke.
“My guest is a former student of mine,” he said thoughtfully. “About your age. Why don’t you stay and have dinner with us?”
I hesitated. “I wouldn’t want to impose…”
Before I could finish, a firm knock echoed at the door. Mr. Samuel turned toward the door. “Ah, that must be him.”
As the door opened, my breath caught in my throat to see who was walking in. Lucas.
“Lucas?” I called out.
His gaze met mine as he stood in the doorway, just as stunned as I was. “Julia.” He called with a smile.
Mr. Samuel, noticing our reactions, raised an eyebrow. “You two know each other?”
