Chapter 4

Shawn quickly instructed his men to drag me to the bedroom.
Kellie was lying on a chaise longue, groaning softly as she clutched her stomach.
“Shawn, the baby is unsettled. The doctor advised us to use powdered pearls from a mermaid’s birth to stabilize the pregnancy.”
Shawn turned toward me, his gaze sharp and threatening.
“Start crying now! Give us the pearls!”
I leaned weakly against the wall, blood still oozing from the wounds on my tail.
“Mermaids don’t cry tears, so where would we get pearls?”
For mermaids, genuine blood pearls only form when we shed tears of blood in complete despair.
But Shawn wouldn’t believe me.
“If anything happens to Kellie’s baby, your life won’t be enough to compensate!”
He ordered them to throw me into the tank and pressed a button on the control panel. A high–voltage electric current surged from the bottom of the tank.
My tail thrashed violently, striking the pool wall as blood poured out, turning the water a deep red.

“Melanie, are you still not crying?”
At that moment, Kellie jumped up, eyes wide with excitement, pointing to the pearl that had slipped from my grasp.
“There really are pearls!”
My heart tightened painfully, and I instinctively reached for it.
That pearl was Sophie–transformed. If I could return it to the ocean, my daughter could live again.
“This isn’t just any pearl–it’s Sophie…”
“Give it to me!”
Shawn forcibly unclenched my fingers and played with the pearl in his hand.
“No!”
I lunged to reclaim it, but the high–voltage current running through the tank left me almost speechless.
“It’s Sophie’s essence… if you return it to the sea, she can come back to life…”
Shawn’s expression turned menacing as he glared at me with lethal determination.
“You didn’t just take my sister’s life–now you have the audacity to curse your own child?”
He shoved the pearl into the doctor’s hands.
“Grind it into powder right now.”

“No!”
My scream reverberated through the room.
Despite my desperate attempts, I could only watch in despair as they destroyed Sophie’s pearl, reducing it to powder and mixing it into a cup.
I stood frozen, almost hearing Sophie’s plea for help.
“Mommy, save me…”
Pain erupted in my chest, and streams of bloodied tears began to flow from my eyes.
As they fell, the drops transformed into crimson pearls in mid–air, clattering onto the floor.
Kellie shrieked with excitement.
“They’re blood pearls! Grab them quickly!”
Shawn quickly knelt to gather the scattered pearls, oblivious to the calm despair in my eyes.
When a mermaid shed tears of blood, disaster was imminent.
Anyone who had consumed mermaid blood would face repercussions.
Shawn noticed my bleeding eyes and was about to say something when Kellie clutched his arm.
“Shawn, it hurts so much!” she cried, holding her stomach tightly, sweat streaming down her face from the pain.
At the sight, Shawn immediately picked her up and commanded his men to lock me in the tank.

“Bitch, did you do something? If anything happens to Kellie, I’ll make sure Sophie loses her scales!” he threatened..
I remained silent as he locked me in the basement.
Suddenly, the glass in the basement shattered, letting in the salty sea breeze–and an ethereal song.
A smile spread across my face.
My brother had come to take me home.
