Subsequently, I experienced a pregnancy loss. The baby I had yearned for was no more.
During that period, I wept so intensely that I lost consciousness multiple times. Jacob, conversely, appeared unburdened. In retrospect, he likely had been hoping for this outcome from the start.
Strangely, I felt a hint of reprieve as well. Perhaps it was for the better. A child raised in a home. devoid of love would have endured an intolerable existence.
The Swiss landscape was awe–inspiring, and I chose to make it my new home. After securing residency, I acquired a modest villa in the vicinity. It wasn’t spacious, but it was snug and ideal for a solitary dweller.
My life here was serene yet gratifying. To enliven my home, I brought in a young cat and dog. The kitten, with its peculiar tendency to drink from my foot bath, was dubbed Water. The puppy, fond of carrying pebbles in its mouth, was christened Pebble.
Their presence infused my once–tranquil life with new energy. Their antics kept me occupied, constantly tidying up their messes.
Yet I never anticipated Jacob would locate me here.
It occurred on a day I had arranged to join a group excursion for skiing in the Swiss Alps.
As I exited my residence, Jacob suddenly materialized, obstructing my path.
“Larissa, you’re actually here!” he exclaimed.
Initially, I failed to recognize him. It had been a month since our last encounter, and his appearance had drastically changed–gaunt, worn, and a far cry from the self–assured CEO I
once knew.
Upon seeing me, his listless eyes brightened. He moved towards me, arms extended as if to embrace me. But I retreated, evading his touch.
I increased the gap between us, regarding him warily. “Keep your distance.”
Jacob halted, a flash of pain crossing his features.
“Larissa, what have I done wrong? Why are you treating me this way?” His tone was laced with distress, as if he were the victim.
“I was away for just a day on business, and you vanished without a trace. You even left divorce papers. Have you stopped loving me?”

His voice carried a sorrow that seemed almost authentic, as if he had endured great injustice.
It was evident he remained unaware of my discovery of his affair with Daisy.
I retrieved my phone and played a recording of Daisy’s words from my hospital room.
“Do you truly believe he loves you? Every night after you drift off, he comes to me. Even during my pregnancy, he couldn’t stay away. And just so you’re aware, the day of your miscarriage, he wasn’t at a business meeting–he was in my bed, enjoying himself. He can’t exist without me anymore. If you’re wise, you’ll grant him a divorce willingly.”
“Oh, and tomorrow, Jacob will be marrying me. It’s going to be even more lavish than the wedding he gave you. Don’t forget to join our celebration!”
Jacob’s complexion turned ashen. He stared at me in shock.
“She… she revealed all this to you?” he stammered.
I put my phone away and spoke calmly, “Now you understand my reason for leaving. Out of respect for our past as spouses, I won’t pursue this matter. I hope you’ll do the same and cease interfering in my life.”
With that, I turned to depart. But he grasped my hand, shaking his head desperately.
“Larissa, please hear me out. I didn’t marry her. You’re the only wife I’ve ever had, and the only one I’ll ever have.”
His explanation felt like a cruel jest. I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
“We’re already divorced. Whoever you choose to wed is no longer my concern. You should return to Daisy now. I’m certain the child she’s carrying awaits you.”
