Chapter 14
Nathan’s phone wouldn’t stop buzzing–calls and messages from his friends lighting up the screen nonstop.
With a deep frown, he finally picked up. His voice was icy. “What’s going on?”
The call connected, but on the other end, his buddies hesitated, as if they weren’t sure how much to say.
“Nathan, look, you need to stay calm, okay? I’m sending you a video. Just watch it, you’ll understand everything. Sarah’s still at the club right now. If you want to confront her, there’s still time!”
As soon as he finished speaking, a video popped up on Nathan’s phone.
Nathan tapped it open, his expression growing darker with every second. The footage was shaky at first, but then it settled–and there was Sarah, grinning smugly at the camera.
“Julia finally divorced Nathan!” Sarah announced, raising her glass. “Let’s drink to me and Nathan finally being together!“>
Her friends burst out laughing, one after another.
“Sarah, you’re unbelievable. A few staged suicide attempts and Julia was out of the picture. She should’ve left ages ago–she never belonged with Mr. Haskins in the first place!“>
“Exactly! You and Nathan grew up together. Same kind of families, same background. It’s always been you two who belonged together.” Sarah’s been in love with Mr. Haskins for years. Now you’re finally getting your happy ending! When you two get married and have kids, don’t forget us–we all helped you!“>
Sarah’s smile only widened at their praise. “Don’t worry, I won’t forget. You’ll all get your share of the good stuff, I promise.“}
“Julia was just pathetic, another friend chimed in. “I made up some story about her getting someone to attack me, and Nathan believed every word. He got me a new kidney and looked after me for so long–obviously I mean something to him, even if he won’t admit it.” “Now that Julia’s gone, Nathan will realize how amazing you are, Sarah. He’ll fall for you, just wait! And everyone who helped–I’ll remember you all, and you’ll be rewarded when the time comes!“}
They kept laughing and chatting, completely oblivious to what was coming.
By now, Nathan’s face was so stormy it was almost scary. His eyes were hard and cold, and anger radiated from him in waves.
He drove straight to the club, barely stopping for breath. His friends were waiting outside Sarah’s private room, so tense they barely moved.
Inside, the women were still tipsy and laughing, not realizing danger was right outside the door.
“I’m telling you, Julia left way too soon,” one of them said. “We still had plenty of tricks up our sleeves. Such a waste!”
“No kidding. All she knew how to do was flirt with men. If Mr. Haskins hadn’t protected her, she’d have been chewed up and spit out a long time ago!”
“Seriously, we were just trying to teach her a lesson. She should be grateful!”
Nathan couldn’t hold it in anymore. He kicked the door open so hard it slammed against the wall.
“Sarah! Who gave you the right to treat Julia like this? You must be out of your mind!”
He stormed over, grabbed Sarah by the throat, and pinned her hard against the wall, rage written all over his face.
Sarah went pale, then red as she struggled for air, clawing at his arm, her voice barely a whisper. “I didn’t… you’re wrong… let me go…“> Her friends, who a minute ago were so full of themselves, were now huddled in the corner, too scared to make a sound.
One girl, braver than the rest, tried to step in. “Mr. Haskins, please! Sarah saved your life once, remember? She risked everything for you! You can’t do this to her!”
