Chapter 18
Sarah’s heart stung with pain at his words.
Memories flashed before her eyes–how she used to follow Nathan everywhere, never losing hope. He was the golden boy, admired by everyone in their circle. So many girls secretly liked him. Sarah was just one of the crowd, nothing special.
People called them childhood friends, but really, it was just because their families lived next door. They talked more, saw each other more often, that was it. Nathan always seemed out of reach, like some flawless prince. He never really noticed anyone.>>
If only he’d stayed that way. Maybe Sarah wouldn’t have lost her mind like this. If no one could have him, at least that felt fair.
But then Julia came along–like something out of a love story. Nathan fell for her at first sight, stepped down from his pedestal, and chased after her, saying he’d love her for the rest of his life.
Julia didn’t have to do anything. She just had Nathan’s heart, just like that. Everyone envied her. Every girl wanted to be her.
Sarah had already given up, until fate threw her a lifeline. During the earthquake, she’d risked her life to save Nathan. Two lives that should’ve never crossed suddenly collided.
After that, Sarah used her act of heroism as an excuse, making Nathan promise her things he never would have otherwise. But it was all just a desperate attempt to hold onto him, to push Julia out. She didn’t even know what she’d done wrong.
Sarah wiped the blood from her face, not caring anymore how she looked in front of Nathan. She staggered to her feet–not to run away, but straight to the window. Climbing onto the sill, she shot him a bitter, determined smile.§
“Nathan, I saved your life. If you really want to repay me, forget about Julia. Stay with me forever. If not, I’ll jump.“{
Her skinny body trembled in the wind, like a piece of fluff about to blow away.
Nathan didn’t even flinch. If anything, he looked irritated. Her life meant nothing to him.
He rubbed his brow, sighing. “I told you, the moment I took that knife for you, we were even. I’ve done more than enough for you. Guilt–tripping me won’t work.”
“Whether you jump or not, that’s your choice. I just want you to pay for what you did to Julia. Besides, I’ve already called the Keller family. Even if you don’t jump, I’ll make sure your life isn’t easy.“}
His voice was cold as ice, every word stabbing into Sarah’s chest.
Pain bloomed inside her, sharp and overwhelming.
She sucked in a shaky breath, feeling nothing but bitterness. With one last desperate look at Nathan, she made up her mind. She let go. “Nathan, remember this–i died because of you. You’ll live with this pain forever!“}
“I curse you to lose your love, to be alone for the rest of your life!”
Sarah gave him one last smile, full of love and hate, and stepped off the ledge.
Her thin body tumbled like a broken kite, twisting helplessly before hitting the ground with a sickening thud.
Almost instantly, blood pooled around her, staining her and the concrete bright red.
Paramedics arrived quickly and took her to the hospital.
She’d only jumped from the third floor–not that high. Because they got her there fast enough, Sarah survived. But the fall left her paralyzed and her mind broken, lost to the world forever.!
