Chapter 2
When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying in a hospital bed.

I subconsciously reached out to touch my belly, and the hollow feeling filled me with dread.
“We’ve secured the placenta. As for the flesh and blood… Helen, could you wait a little longer?” Jaxon’s voice drifted from outside.
I glanced over and saw the door was partially ajar.
Helen was seated in her wheelchair while Jaxon gently embraced her, speaking in soothing tones.
“If I never walk again, I’d rather be dead!” She appeared hopeless, her words heavy with despair.
“Don’t say that, Helen. We just need the flesh and blood from her face. I’ll get it today. Trust me.” He kissed Helen’s forehead affectionately, his tone casual.
I covered my mouth tightly to stay silent, letting my tears soak my pillow.
Once their voices disappeared completely, I realized I’d been holding my breath in terror. Despite quickly putting on an oxygen mask, I still felt lightheaded. Eventually, exhaustion overtook me.
I dreamed of the past again.
Back then, Jaxon commanded attention wherever he went at school. He excelled academically, was incredibly handsome, and had a kind nature.
Yet he remained distant and unapproachable, intimidating others from getting close.

I’d always been careful to hide my feelings until Helen openly declared
her love for him.
I witnessed Jaxon falling deeply in love with her. I watched their embraces, their kisses, and their arguments. I watched for three entire years until the Crawford family went bankrupt. Helen suddenly broke up with him and fled overseas.
During those months, Jaxon seemed like a walking corpse. I felt so
heartbroken that I had no idea what to do.
I decided to reach out to him. After we graduated, I gave up my postgraduate studies to join his new business venture.
I consumed countless drinks with him, glass after glass, too many to remember. Yet whenever I noticed concern in his expression, I felt deeply
content.
He displayed remarkable business instincts. Within just a few years, he transformed a tiny startup into a publicly traded corporation.
When the company debuted on the stock market, he set off fireworks for me all night and arranged thousands of roses. He declared his love amid all the romance.
Years of hidden affection finally paid off. I felt like I owned everything wonderful in the world.
We progressed naturally, holding hands, embracing, and sharing kisses. He remained gentle and considerate, and the adoration in his gaze always made me feel shy.
It continued until the proposal day when I learned Helen had gotten divorced.
A stabbing pain jolted me awake from the dream.
