Chapter 3
I gradually opened my eyes to see the same ward, though intense pain shot through my thigh.
As I tried to sit up, Jaxon entered carrying a thermos bucket.
“Eloise, is it still hurting?” He frowned slightly with apparent concern.
He appeared genuinely worried about me.
It was a pity that it was all an act. He’d become skilled at faking emotions.
“My leg…” I fought back tears and managed to speak.
“Your leg got injured in the crash. The doctor bandaged it and said it’ll heal eventually, so don’t worry.” Guilt briefly crossed Jaxon’s face as his voice grew gentler.
How absurd he was to blame it on the accident. His pathetic excuse made me feel even more foolish.
“Eloise, I’ll find the world’s best doctor for you. I won’t let you get any scars.” He tenderly brushed tears from my cheeks before leaving with those words.
He stayed away for the following week.
I only saw him again after waking from another round of anesthesia. The familiar ache in my thigh told me they’d likely removed more flesh.
Jaxon and Helen were like hungry monsters, planning to devour me.piece by piece.
“Why not take the flesh from her face? Don’t you want me walking again?

Jaxon, do you enjoy watching me stay disabled forever?” Helen’s harsh voice echoed from the corridor.

Jaxon paused briefly before embracing her and explaining softly, “Helen, the thigh’s flesh works just as well. Eloise cares about her appearance. If we truly damaged her face, she couldn’t handle it.”
I remained motionless in bed, letting my fingernails pierce my palms.
Half an hour later, the attending physician entered. Seeing the
hopelessness in my expression, sympathy flickered in his eyes, though he seemed reluctant to speak.
Finally, he simply said, “We only removed damaged flesh. It’ll regenerate over time.”
He could even repeat such ridiculous lies endlessly.
Jaxon must have thought I was a fool. He was right, though. A devoted fool like me probably seemed pathetic to him.
After the doctor finished changing my bandages and left, I checked the time and decided to escape.
In my remaining days, I refused to stay trapped here like livestock while they used my body as they pleased.
I wanted to get out.
Just as I reached for my phone, the door swung open once more.
Helen wheeled herself in slowly. Despite sitting below my eye level, her face radiated smugness.
“Eloise, you don’t seem to be enjoying yourself, do you? So what if you stole Jaxon from me? Whenever I call him, he’ll return to me obediently.
“You’re not even good enough to be my replacement!”

“How dare you ignore me!” Only when she yanked my hair violently did I notice she’d actually risen from her wheelchair.
