Aiden tugged on Louis’s sleeve. He’d clearly heard what those people were saying–he didn’t believe for a second that Louis
hadn’t.
Sure, having Freya line up wasn’t exactly wrong. Their teacher always talked about gender equality. But the teacher had also said boys should take care of girls–and husbands even more so. Letting Freya wait in line like this just felt… off.
“Uncle, shouldn’t we be the ones lining up instead? Freya’s a girl. My teacher said boys should take care of girls. And husbands should take even better care of their wives.”
Nearby, the conversation among a group of women continued:
“Aww, that little kid is adorable. Just listen to what he said–so sweet. His teacher must be great. I mean, yeah, good looks count for a lot, but the girl’s clearly beautiful too. Why should she be the one standing in line? Doesn’t feel right.”
“Exactly! What’s the point of a man being handsome if he’s not kind? Even if he’s rich and good–looking–if he doesn’t care about you, what’s the use? These days, women can earn their own money. Maybe we can’t all be super rich, but we can live comfortably if we work for it. That girl must be crazy in love to put up with this.”
“I’m with you. A man can be rich and hot, but if you’re not in his heart, you’re nothing more than mosquito blood and plain rice. Better to find someone who actually loves you. That’s what makes life worth living.”
“Oh please. If a guy like that actually wanted one of you, would you say no?”
“Um… I’d consider it. I mean, those genes? Just look at that kid—he’s precious. If I could have a child that cute, maybe it’d be worth putting up with a few things.”
“Pfft. So you’re just another face–chaser, huh?”
The group chatted on as if Louis and Aiden couldn’t hear them. Aiden tugged on Louis again, starting to feel a little embarrassed by all the attention.
“Didn’t your teacher also tell you about equality?” Louis said, still motionless. “She’s lining up for this one. The next ride, we’ll take turns–including you.”
Aiden finally relaxed. So it wasn’t that Louis was making Freya do all the work. Whew. He might not have liked Freya before, but that had changed. The old Freya could’ve been pushed around however Louis wanted, and he wouldn’t have cared. But now? If Louis made her do too much, Aiden would feel bad. This new Freya was great–he really liked her.
“Alright then. I’ll line up for the next one.”
The women nearby overheard the exchange and instantly changed their tune.
“Oh wow—look at that. They’re not bullying her at all. He’s teaching the kid a lesson. That’s such responsible parenting. Rich people really do take education more seriously. This is what it means to lead by example. Everyone takes turns in line, even the kid. No one gets special treatment. That’s amazing.”
“That’s actually a really good approach. It helps kids learn to contribute and realize that family members doing things for them isn’t something they’re entitled to. It builds gratitude. I’m gonna go home and teach this to my husband. We need to start training our little monster too. No more spoiling.”
“Totally agree. If you spoil kids too much, they don’t learn anything. Letting them get away with everything just ruins their values. Even rich kids have to wait in line. My sister’s kid always expects the adults to do everything–ugh, I need to have a talk with her
