Before Freya could answer her own question, Aiden jumped in eagerly. No way, Freya! You didn’t talk too much at all. I thought you were amazinglike a warrior princess or something! You were so cool! Honestly, I used to think if you ever got into a fight with someone, you’d probably just cry. But today, you proved me wrong. You were nothing like that halfdead version of you from before!”

Halfdead? What kind of description was that? Even a cannon fodder character didn’t deserve that kind of comparison. Was it really that obvious?she asked, skeptical

Totally! Ask my uncle if you don’t believe me,Aiden said earnestly. You used to pile on makeup like a ghost, sleep all day, and live like a zombie. I always felt bad for my uncle and wondered why he had to marry you. But now you’ve changed so muchI actually like this new you!”

Sweet kid, Freya thought. But you’re still too young. Your uncle probably doesn’t share that sentiment. I was just arguing with a lunatic in publiche probably thinks I’m utterly disgraceful. She sighed silently

Louis finally spoke from the front seat. Next time you meet someone like that, don’t bother engaging.”

Freya nodded quickly. Right. Arguing with someone like thatit’s really beneath me. Total embarrassment.”

Louis kept his eyes on the road. His brows furrowed slightly, but then relaxed

That’s not what I meant. Arguing with someone like her might provoke her into getting physical. You’re too small to hold your own in a fight. And you probably wouldn’t be able to say anything too harsh anyway, which would leave you at a disadvantage. Best thing to do is walk away and deal with it later.”

Aiden nodded furiously, filled with admiration. Uncle’s right!”

Freya hadn’t expected Louis to say so muchand with such patience. She felt touched

You’re right. I’ll keep that in mind. I won’t waste my time on people like that again.”

Of course, she mused, the big boss prefers handling problems quietly behind the scenes. But we’re not what we used to be. There’s no way we can deal with things the same way anymore. Even a wrecked ship had some nails left, but these days, all they had left was goodwill. And goodwill, once spent, was gone. Until they rose from the ashes, they had to be careful with every move

If Louis felt it was inappropriate, then she’d try her best not to argue again

The car slowly pulled into the underground parking garage. That’s when Freya remembered something

Oh shoot, I totally forgot to stop by the supermarket. You guys go on aheadI need to pick up a few things. We’re almost out of groceries.”

Aiden grabbed her hand and looked at Louis, who was locking the car. Uncle, let’s go with her?”

No need, really,Freya said quickly. You’ve both had a long day. I’m just heading to the one across the street. It’ll be quick- I’ll be back in no time.”

Let’s all go.Louis slipped the keys into his pocket and started walking off without waiting for a reply. Freya could only sigh as Aiden tugged her along to follow him

At the supermarket, Louis headed toward the stationery aisle. Seizing the opportunity, Freya slipped a few snacks into the cart. She even winked at Aiden

Aiden got the message immediately and whispered, You were totally planning to sneak out and buy junk food, weren’t you? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have tagged along.”

Freya whispered back, It’s fine. Just take your uncle outside first once he’s done. Don’t let him see what I boughtwe’ll sneak it later.”
