I ignored him and turned to go upstairs.
James suddenly lunged after me, blocking my path.
He raked his hand through his hair in frustration.
“Sophie and I are just family–there’s nothing romantic between us. Why can’t you let it go?!”
“Family?” I let out a cold laugh. “You have a baby with your ‘family‘? Do I look three years old to you?”
His brows drew tight. He looked annoyed, but still tried to explain.
“When Sophie’s boyfriend died, she almost killed herself. Giving her a child… it gave her a reason to live.”

He grabbed my wrist suddenly.
“Olivia, the Johnsons are a family of doctors. You all have hearts of gold. You’re not the type to stand by and do nothing.”
“Just think of it as saving Sophie’s life, okay? Let it go.”
“Hearts of gold?” I yanked my hand away, laughing bitterly.
“I’m not kind. I’m stone cold. I want to watch her die. Because maybe if she’s gone, you’ll fin / stop thinking about her!”
SMACK!
A sharp slap landed hard on my cheek.
James’s chest was heaving, his eyes bloodshot.
“If she dies, I’ll make sure you go down with her!”

My left cheek burned–but not half as much as my heart.
Five years together, and this was the first time he hit me.
Every time it came to Sophia, that calm and elegant man would turn into a complete
monster.
I suddenly felt utterly exhausted.
“James, you’ve hit me. You’ve cursed me. Let’s just end this.”
“We never even got the license. I wasn’t the one standing at the altar. The whole thing’s just a damn joke.”
He froze–just for a second–then hugged me tightly.
“Olivia, baby, don’t be like this. I know you care about the marriage certificate. We’ll get it in a few days. okay?”

“Sophie won’t be living here forever. She’ll leave once she finds someone new. Give it a year or two. Trust me.”
“She’s beautiful and sweet. Tons of men would line up for her. She won’t have trouble finding someone.”
“But I’ll need to vet them carefully. She’s too naive–and with a baby, she’s an easy target…”
I cut him off coldly.
“No need to look. You care about her. You’re the baby’s father. You’re already the best candidate.”
His body stiffened. He let go of me, sneering.
“You think I can’t live without you? Weren’t
the one who begged to marry me in the first place?”

Our engagement had been arranged by Grandpa Carter, after my dad saved his life on the operating table twenty years ago.
My father joked about it, but never took it seriously.
He used to say, “My precious daughter deserves to marry the man she loves.”
But unfortunately, I fell in love with James.
Three years ago, he went to pursue a degree at one of the top universities in our nation.
There, he secretly married a gentle but stubborn poor girl–Sophia–in Las Vegas.
When I found out, I immediately proposed breaking off the engagement.
But he dropped to his knees, eyes red, pleading:
“Olivia, I only love you. I’ve already divorced

her. Please… just give me one more chance.”
And I gave in. I forgave him.
It really was all my fault.
“Jimmy, Liv’s just young and immature. You need to be more patient with her… Not like me–I’ve long gotten used to swallowing my feelings.”
Sophia stood at the door with her suitcase, forcing a smile and waving at us.
་་
“I heading out. Don’t see me off.”
“Get out of the way!”
James suddenly barked and shoved me aside, chasing after Sophia.
My foot slipped. I fell hard down the stairs.
Pain shot through every inch of my body. My vision blurred as searing pain exploded in my
limbs and head

He stepped over me–didn’t even spare a glance.
He rushed past and grabbed Sophia from behind, his voice trembling.
“Sophie! You’re pregnant and alone in a foreign country–where would you even go? Are you trying to scare me to death?”
Sophia wiped her tears stubbornly, forcing a smile.
“I can take care of myself. And if it comes to it… there are plenty of men out there. I’ll find someone to take care of us.”
“I won’t allow it!” James roared, cutting her off, dragging her back by the hand.
As they passed by me, Sophia threw me a look of false concern.

“Should we call a doctor for Liv? She looks badly hurt…”
James gave me a cold glance, his voice flat.
“No need. She’s a doctor. She can treat herself.”
