Two days later, I woke up in the hospital.
The first thing I saw was James sitting beside my bed, a bruise darkening his face. When he saw my eyes flutter open, his dim gaze suddenly lit up.
“Olivia, I was wrong about you…
I thought you didn’t want to save Sophie.”
I didn’t respond. In his eyes, I was already a malicious woman.
Seeing my silence, he leaned in urgently.
“Olivia, say something, please.”
Annoyed, I closed my eyes. “Get out.”

James’s expression darkened, but he stubbornly remained seated.
Just then, the door to the room opened, and Matthew walked in with
a huge bouquet of flowers.
When he saw James, his charming, fox–like eyes narrowed dangerously.
“Well, well, the twice–married man,” he sneered. “I was gone for two minutes to buy flowers, and you
snuck back in?”
James shot to his feet, fists clenched so tightly his knuckles cracked.
“Watch your mouth. I don’t like that term. And as for my wife–who I see and how–I don’t need your
permission.”
Matthew set the flowers on

“James, you are a twice–married man. And wife? Please. At the wedding, the one in the white dress wasn’t your fiancée-it was mine.”
“Fiancée?!” James’s voice shot up as he turned to me. “Olivia, who the hell is this guy? Explain!”
Explain?
I laughed bitterly to myself. I had said
it countless times–I wanted to call off the engagement. He never listened.
For Sophia, he cursed at me, even laid
a hand on me.
What was left to explain? Did he event
deserve an answer?

I ignored him entirely, turning weakly
to Matthew.
“Matthew… my head hurts.”
Matthew immediately sat down by my side, naturally taking my hand in his.
“The doctor said you’ve had two concussions in just a few days. You need complete rest,” he said gently.
His thumb rubbed soothingly along my inner wrist in a quiet gesture of
comfort.
James’s gaze turned ice–cold. “Let go
of her!”
“Why should I?” Matthew didn’t even look at him. “Because you left her behind in the wedding car? Or
because you almost got her killed

James flinched. “It was all a
misunderstanding!”
At that moment, the doctor walked in.
“Mr. Carter, your wife is awake. I
need to go over some post–trauma
precautions.‘
James shot me a look. “Olivia, we’re
not done talking.”
Then he left in a rush.
The door had barely closed when Matthew suddenly pulled me into a tight hug, his voice choked with tears.
“Olivia, if I’d known James was such a piece of trash, I wouldn’t have let him hurt you for five damn years.”
“You are the girl I’ve been dreaming

of for years. How could that twice–married bastard treat you like
this…”
I patted his back helplessly. I was the one who got hurt, yet somehow I was the one comforting him.
“Matthew, I’m not crying–why are
you?”
“Because it breaks my damn heart,
okay?” He buried his face in my
shoulder and rubbed away his tears. “I always told you to be fierce with men–and you used it all on me!”
I handed him a tissue.
“Can you at least wipe your tears with
a tissue?”
He glanced up, a mischievous glint in
his eve

“Wipe them for me?”
I pinched his cheek. He retaliated by tugging on my hair.
Typical. Every time we met, we ended up bickering.
I was just wondering if we’d argue like this every day after we got married when he suddenly cupped the back of my head and kissed me.
My face burned red instantly.
His ears turned scarlet too, but he still
tried to act cool.
“No more fights… as long as you kiss me, I’ll let you win every time.”
