What’s wrong with being cold to others? Sophia told herself. It just means that when he falls for the female lead, she’ll be the only one he cares about. That kind of male lead was so much better than the ones who were playboys before meeting the heroine and only turned devoted after countless rounds of toxic drama.
Sophia reminded herself not to take it personally. Louis only acted that way because he didn’t know her yet. Once they developed feelings, everything would change. Someday, when they looked back on moments like this, it would just be part of their love story.
Meanwhile, Louis had reached Aiden.
Aiden tilted his head and breathed a sigh of relief. “Uncle, you’re finally here. Freya’s trying to make me look like some kind of helpful, sweet kid, so I couldn’t say no. I’ve been standing here pretending to babysit that dumb girl for ages–so boring.”
“Then stop pretending.” Louis turned and motioned for him to follow. “Let’s go.”
Without hesitation, Aiden dropped Summer like a bad habit and followed along. He had zero interest in entertaining little girls. The only reason he even came here was for Freya.
Freya ran over, and Aiden immediately grabbed her hand. “Freya, are you hungry? Should we grab lunch now?”
“But it’s only just past ten…”
“Let’s check out something else first,” Louis said, grabbing Aiden’s other hand and leading them both in another direction.
Louis took them to the school’s science center, and Aiden lit up at the sight. “This is it! This is my favorite spot. Freya, I’m gonna take you to the fourth floor later–they’ve got stuff I designed! It’s really fun.”
“Aiden?” A soft, girlish voice called out nearby.
Before Freya could react, a little girl with a ponytail popped into view and bounced up beside Aiden. She grabbed his sleeve excitedly. “I knew you’d come here!“.
“Why are you here?! Let go of me!” Aiden jumped back, startled, and tried to yank his sleeve away from her grip.
“What are you doing?” a stern voice cut in.
The girl reluctantly let go of Aiden’s sleeve and turned toward the voice. “Daddy, I want to play with Aiden.”
“I told you already–just look around and then go do your assignments,” the man said, face tight. He glanced at Louis and Freya and gave them a small nod, but it was cold, wordless, and clearly dismissive.
“But today’s the first day of school…” the little girl whined, clearly unwilling to leave.
Just then, a stunning woman walked over. “Giselle, didn’t I tell you that you need to focus on studying? You’re not listening again. Stop playing around with other kids.”
So that was Giselle’s mother.
After her mom’s warning, Giselle could only pout and trudge after her, sulking the whole way.
Once the trio had left, Aiden scrunched his nose and muttered under his breath, “Wow, they really know how to change with the wind. Back then, they used to push Giselle at me every chance they got. They’d even bring snacks and toys to bribe me. And now they act like I’m contagious or something–can’t get away fast enough.”
He kicked at the ground. “Like I ever wanted to play with Giselle. I don’t play with idiots.”
Freya heard him and felt a pang in her chest. Why did adults have to drag kids into their power games? If Aiden had bad grades, maybe they could justify keeping their daughter away–but Aiden was clearly outstanding. They just didn’t want their child anywhere near him because the Graham family had lost its status.
