Chapter 40
Once they got to the backyard, Sally jerked her hand out of his. “Don’t touch me.”
Her tone was steady, but her voice was cold as ice.
Brad looked up at her, his voice low and serious. “Why is Lillian living at Windmere Estates?”
At that, a mocking smirk tugged at the corner of Sally’s mouth.
So, Jaxon really knew all. Brad actually went digging into Lillian, but it looked like all he found out was the basics about Lillian and where she was staying.
With things like this, Sally just went along with it. “I know her mom. Besides, Jaxon is swamped with work. How is he supposed to look after her?”
“You know her mom?” Brad’s eyes flashed with surprise. “So who is she?”
“Does it have anything to do with you? Why are you so nosy?” Sally retorted.
“You’re my wife, but you’re helping my uncle raise a kid?” Brad sneered, his lips curling. “Don’t you think that’s a little out of line? What if people start gossiping?”
“If Jaxon isn’t worried about it, why should you be?” Sally shot back, her voice cool. “Besides, I gave you the divorce papers ages ago. You still haven’t signed them. What’s your deal?”
Brad said, “My deal? Don’t you know how Grandpa is doing right now? Do you really think I’m the one dragging this out?”
“Like I said before, you could at least consider my suggestion. We could just get the divorce certificate..”
Before Sally could finish, Brad cut her off. “I don’t have the time or energy to play these games with you.”
“So you’re just planning to drag this out forever?” snapped Sally.
“We’ll talk about divorce when Grandpa is fully recovered and his health is totally stable. Until then, don’t even think about it.” Brad’s attitude was rock solid.
Sally was boiling with anger.
She glared at him, her eyes icy and sharp.
“And another thing.” Brad was about to leave, but suddenly turned back and said, “Don’t let Grandpa find out you’re helping Jaxon with his daughter. If he finds out, there’s no way I can explain it to him.”
Of course, Sally knew what to do. This was something Howard could never find out about.
Just pretending Lillian was an illegitimate daughter was already wild enough.
If he found out she was actually keeping Lillian with her, Howard would totally lose it.
“Just give the kid back to Jaxon. You won’t even take care of your own son, but you’re out here babysitting for someone else?” said Brad.
Sally shot him a lazy glance. “Isn’t there already someone fighting to take care of your son? Why should I worry about it?”
Brad frowned, “Can you just talk like a normal person? Drop the attitude.”
“I have to do a follow–up for Grandpa. I don’t have time to waste on you,” said Sally.
As Sally walked away, Brad called after her, “I heard you opened a clinic. Where did you get the money? Don’t tell me you used that one million dollars I gave you!”
Sally stopped in her tracks when she heard that.
She turned back, calm as ever. “Let me set the record straight. That lion statue was mine to begin with. You gave it away without asking me, and you were the one who decided to pay for it. So you bought it from me.”
“On second thought, I spent a million dollars on a pair of lion statues. I must’ve been out of my mind.” The look in Brad’s eyes was full of contempt. and disrespect.
Sally let out a cold, mocking laugh.
With her skills, that price was more than fair. Honestly, she could’ve charged even more.

Chapter 40
If anything, one million dollars was already a bargain for him.

“Go ask around. See if you can get a pair of lion statues like that for a million dollars,” said Sally.
Before Brad could say anything else, Sally strode off without looking back.
“So you’re saying you gave me a deal? Where do you get that kind of confidence?” asked Brad.
Brad’s voice echoed behind her, but Sally didn’t bother to respond. She just walked away.
After Sally walked into Howard’s room, she checked on how he was recovering.
“Howard, are you feeling any better today?” Sally took his pulse, glancing up at his gentle, kind face.
Howard nodded. “Much better. I can even walk around now, and my breathing is a lot smoother.”
“I’ll write you a prescription. Take it for a few days, and with some acupuncture, you’ll probably bounce back even faster,” said Sally,
Howard nodded. “Alright, I’ll do whatever you say.”
As Sally was packing up her things, Howard asked curiously, “Nick called me today and said there’s a little girl with you. Is that true?”
Sally’s hand froze for a second as she was putting away the medical kit.
She’d been careful about everything, except her own son.
She’d almost forgotten how close Nick was with Howard. He told Howard everything.
Sally was just about to explain when a familiar voice cut in, “That’s Jaxon’s kid. Sally is taking care of her now.”
Sally looked up in disbelief, her eyes darting to the doorway.
Brad was leaning against the doorframe. No one knew when he’d shown up. He watched them with a cool expression.
But Sally still caught that hint of challenge in his eyes.
He’d just told her not to say anything to Howard.
And now he spilled the beans himself.
Howard looked up in shock, his voice full of disbelief. “Brad, what nonsense are you talking about? Jaxon isn’t even married. How could he possibly have a daughter? And why would Sally be the one taking care of her?”
“She’s his illegitimate daughter. I wasn’t going to bring this up, but honestly, it’s just not right for Sally to be living here with Jaxon’s kid. I thought you should know, so you could decide what’s fair…”
“Brad!” Sally shouted, her voice sharp and forceful, startling Brad at the door.
Brad immediately fell silent, lifting his gaze to look at Sally with cold indifference. He didn’t utter another word.
“Sally, what exactly is going on? Why are you helping Jaxon take care of his daughter?” asked Howard.
Jaxon had never given her a real answer to that question. In front of Brad, she might have gotten away with saying he was just too busy.
But that lousy excuse would never work on Howard. He’d see right through it.
Seeing Sally hesitate, Howard quickly reached for his phone on the nightstand.
“Sally, help me find Jaxon’s number. I’m calling him right now to get to the bottom of this!” said Howard.
