Chapter 44
Sally’s heart suddenly jumped into her throat.
The air between them was thick with unmistakably intimate.
“Mr. Zale…” Sally swallowed nervously. A flash of confusion flickered in her eyes, but Jaxon caught it right away.
“You’ve got an eyelash on your face. The hand that was cupping her chin slid down to her cheek
His long, defined fingers brushed her fair skin as he gently plucked away a tiny eyelash.
Sally instinctively pulled back to put some space between them, but the atmosphere only grew more awkward.
“Sharp eyes, Mr. Zale: Sally forced herself to look calm, curling her lips into a faint, easy smile.
“Why are you so nervous? You didn’t seem the least bit flustered when we accidentally kissed that night…” said Jazon
His words hit her like a bolt of lightning on a clear day.
Sally’s eyes went wide in shock.
She stared at Jaxon, taking a step back in disbelief. “We kissed?”
She pointed at Jaxon and then at herself. Her shock only deepened.
“It was the night you got drunk,” he said, teasing as he watched her stunned expression. “Looks like you really don’t remember?
Jaxon’s lips curled into a lazy, careless smile.
Sally quickly reached out and grabbed his sleeve, but the moment Jaxon glanced back at her, she let go just as fast
“Well, Mr. Zale, Sally stammered, “are you serious? Did I really kiss you when I was drunk that night?”
Jaxon smirked, “Why are you so nervous? It’s not like it was our first time.
It really wasn’t the first time their lips had touched.
Last time, during the fire, Jaxon had given her CPR.
Put CPR and kissing were definitely not the same thing.
No wonder he told her not to drink again.
Sally’s face turned bright red.
Jason suddenly turned to face her, leaning in a little. “Relax, I’m not asking you to marry me or something. But Mrs. Zale, you’re not so innocent anymore. What do you think Brad would do if he found out?
Sally blunted out, nervous, “You can’t tell him about this.”
Almost on instinct, she reached out and covered his mouth with her hand.
The warmth of his lips against her palm made her snatch her hand back, and she tried to sound calm as she said, “Anyway, Brad and I are basically over. No need to make things messier. If you don’t mind, just pretend you gave me CPR again.”
“But a kiss is a kiss. You can’t just call it CPR.” Jaxon’s smile was absolutely captivating
Sally had never seen this side of Jaxon before.
Lately, they’d been spending more time together, and he wasn’t nearly as cold as everyone said.
“Let’s just call it an accident. I promise I never drink again” Sally didn’t dare linger. “Lillian is waiting for me at home. I need to make her dinner
Ghodbye, Mr. Zale” Sally dashed inside before he could even respond.
Jaxon watched her go, the curve of a smirk still playing on his lips.
She was just getting more and more interesting.
When Sally got home, all she could think about were the things Jaxon had said.

Chapter 44
She still couldn’t believe that she’d actually kissed Jaxon that night.
Other than Brad, she’d never been that close to any other man.
And to top it off, he was Brad’s uncle.
Just thinking about it was enough to blow her mind.
Now, she couldn’t stop thinking about their kiss.
Sally shook her head, trying to shake those wild images away.
*Sally, why are you shaking your head while chopping veggies? If someone saw you, they’d think you were tipsy. A familiar voice suddenly called out from the kitchen doorway.
Sally jumped, her body giving a little shiver.
She turned to see Abigail watching her with curiosity and quickly tried to compose herself. “No, I was just lost in thought.”
“What could you be thinking about that makes you wobble like that? Are you sure you didn’t have a little too much to drink? Abigail walked over and instinctively gave her a once–over.
At the words, a certain memory flashed through Sally’s mind, and her cheeks instantly turned red.
“I didn’t! Why would I be drunk right now?” said Sally.
Abigail laughed and teased. “Honestly, you look like you are drunk. Your face is as red as an apple.”
Sally nudged her arm, trying to change the subject. “Cut it out. I actually have something serious to tell you.”
“What’s up?” Abigail walked over to the sink and started helping her pick through the vegetables.
Sally didn’t beat around the bush. “Jaxon just stopped by. He said he wants to make Lillian his goddaughter.”
Abigail’s hands froze mid–motion. “Why?”
While chopping vegetables, Sally filled Abigail in on pretty much everything that had happened.
“If that’s the case, it’s a good thing. With Jaxon backing Lillian, she could walk all over Westmere and no one would dare say a word,” said Abigail. Sally just gave a low, husky laugh and didn’t respond.
Abigail nudged her. “What are you laughing at? Jaxon is a powerhouse in the Westmere business world. Compared to him, your husband is not even in the same league.”
“Correction.” Sally’s expression darkened. “You should say ex–husband. We haven’t signed the papers yet, but as far as I’m concerned, our marriage ended a long time ago.”
“Sorry.” Abigail instinctively reached out and gave her a comforting pat on the back. “Slip of the tongue. My bad… *
Sally dropped the diced carrots onto a plate, staying silent.
Abigail said, “But seriously, why is that guy still dragging his feet on the divorce papers? He’s so slow…“.
Sally said, “He keeps using Howard’s health as an excuse to stall me. To be fair, Howard really is against us getting divorced”
Abigail got all fired up. “Just push him to sign first. Howard’s issues are nothing compared to your happiness.”
“Alright.” Sally nodded softly. “I’ll go see him tomorrow.”
“That’s my girl!” Abigail cheered, giving her a thumbs–up. “You’re always on the ball.”
Sally just chuckled and didn’t say anything else.
The next day was a workday, so Sally figured Brad would be at the Zale Group. She planned to talk to him about the divorce in person.
But as soon as she got to the door, she caught a glimpse through the half–open crack. Lena was sitting right on Brad’s lap.
Her arms were wrapped around his neck as she pouted, “Brad, there’s a party tomorrow. Will you go with me?”
