Chapter 49
Hearing this, Jaxon let out a low, husky laugh but didn’t say anything.
He pointed toward the door. “The guy who just left…”
He didn’t finish his words, clearly waiting for Sally to answer.
Sally replied, “I’m planning to hire a new doctor for the clinic. When I’m not around, he can help look after things and see patients. He’s pretty capable, so I told him to start tomorrow.”
As soon as she finished, Jaxon suddenly stepped closer to her.
Sally instinctively took a few steps back. “Mr. Zale, what’s wrong?”
“You sure you’re hiring him just to help out? He’s a little too good–looking for that. Don’t you think?” Jaxon leaned one hand on the counter behind her, his voice dropping a few notches.
Sally froze for a second and then managed a soft reply, “You can’t judge someone just by their looks. He’s actually really good at what he does. Besides, everyone wears masks when they see patients. Who will notice what he looks like?”
Maybe no one else will, but you will.” Jaxon’s voice was deep, his expression unreadable.
Sally wasn’t sure what he meant by that, her brows furrowing slightly. “But honestly, I think you’re better looking, Mr. Zale.”
Hearing this, Jaxon instinctively dropped his gaze, his long lashes trembling just a little.
Seeing his reaction, Sally couldn’t help but smile, “Especially when you smile. You look even better then.”
Jaxon cleared his throat and quickly took his hand off the counter behind her.
As he turned away, a half smile played at the corners of his lips. “If Brad heard you say that, he’d probably get jealous.”
Sally let out a cold laugh and bent down to pick up some cardboard from the floor.
“Mr. Zale, you really overestimate how much I matter to him. Honestly, even if I made out with another guy right in front of him, I doubt he’d even bat an eye…”
Jaxon turned at her voice, glancing back at Sally with a casual, almost careless tone. “Oh? Is that so?”
Sally just shrugged, picked up the piece of cardboard, and tossed it into the trash can.
She didn’t answer him directly but just said coolly, “Too bad I’m not the kind of person who does something that ridiculous. Otherwise…”
“Otherwise, do you actually want to try it?” Jaxon’s eyes lifted, a hint of mischief in his lazy gaze.
Sally froze for a second, and when she met his eyes, she instinctively swallowed.
Suddenly, the memory of kissing Jaxon flashed through her mind.
Even though she’d been drunk that night and barely remembered what happened, she couldn’t help but think about it.
Jaxon noticed her silence, and his smile grew even wider. “I didn’t expect you to be so bold. You’re quite good at having fun.”
Snapped out of her thoughts, Sally blurted out, “No! I was just talking!”
“Since you’re so hung up on Brad, why not find a guy to get back at him? Doesn’t it bother you, seeing him and Lena always together?” asked Jaxon.
Sally let out a mocking laugh. “Please, I stopped loving him ages ago. Why would I care? Besides, I’m not about to waste my time just to get back at him…”
Jaxon said lazily, “Honestly, that doctor from earlier seemed like a pretty good option.”
“Mr. Zale, what are you even thinking? Starting tomorrow, he’s just my colleague. I’m not interested in him,” said Sally.
Jaxon said, “If you really can’t find anyone, you can always come to me.”
Sally’s eyes shot up in shock, completely stunned.
Jaxon met her gaze, not backing down at all.

“Mr. Zale, you…” Sally hesitated, the rest of her words stuck in her throat.
Jaxon’s tone was calm. “Why so nervous? It’s just fake.”
Sally said, “I could fake it with someone else, but with you, Mr. Zale, that just wouldn’t feel right.”
Jaxon’s expression suddenly darkened, but he didn’t say another word.
Sally couldn’t shake the weird vibe in the air. It felt especially awkward right now.
Worried Jaxon might say something even more shocking, she quickly changed the subject. “Mr. Zale, are you thirsty? Want me to grab you a bottle of water?”
“No need,” Jaxon replied coolly. “I just stopped by to see Lillian. I’m about to head out.”
Sally had no choice but to let it go. “Alright.”
Jaxon had only taken a few steps when he suddenly stopped. Sally, who was about to walk him out, didn’t expect him to halt so abruptly.
She bumped her forehead right into his back. Even through his suit, she could feel the warmth radiating from him.
Jaxon turned around and, almost without thinking, reached out to steady her by the arm.
Their eyes met. In an instant, the air between them grew romantic and suggestive.
Once she found her balance, Jaxon let go and asked calmly, “The clinic opens the day after tomorrow, right?”
“Yes, that’s right,” Sally answered quickly.
Jaxon said, “I’ll have someone send over a flower basket. Wishing you a great opening in advance.”
“Thank you, Mr. Zale.” Sally gave him a gentle smile. Jaxon’s gaze lingered on her for a moment before he finally looked away.
It wasn’t until he got into the Maybach that Sally finally looked away.
Even though Jaxon and Brad are both Zales, they couldn’t be more different.
Jaxon might come off as cold and aloof, but everything he did was as warm as sunshine on a winter morning.
Brad, on the other hand, looked cold and heartless, and honestly, that was exactly what he was.
Sally did a quick tidy–up and got ready to head home.
The next day, she spent the whole day at the clinic, stocking all the herbs in the cabinets and taking care of every last detail. Now, all that was left was to wait for opening day,
It was the opening day. Carlos showed up at the clinic bright and early, waiting for Sally to arrive.

When Sally got to the entrance, she saw twelve flower baskets lined up neatly, six on each side of the door.
Carlos greeted, “Morning, Sally!”
“Morning, Carlos.” Sally’s eyes lingered on the flower baskets. “Who sent all these so early?”
Carlos answered, “I ran into the florist when I got here. They said the landlord sent them to you.”
Sally walked over and spotted a card tucked into one of the baskets. [Wishing you a successful grand opening and smooth sailing ahead, from Connor Faye.]
Sally quickly tried to recall the name.
She remembered it was the name listed on the contract when she signed the lease.
Then she suddenly remembered what faxon had said the other day and couldn’t help but smile.
Even though the card had Connor’s name, she doubted he was the one who actually sent the flower baskets.
“Sally…The sudden voice snapped Sally out of her thoughts.
She came back to herself, smiled softly, and handed Carlos a set of keys. “Here, these are for you. If you get here before me, you won’t have to wait outside.

Chapter 49
Carlos said, “Sally, I just started working here. Are you sure…”
“Sally gave her a gentle smile. “I trust you.
Carlos was caught off guard by her warmth and then grinned, “I’ll do my best, Sally. I won’t let you down.”
Sally slid the key into the lock and nodded. “Good.”
After the clinic opened, people started coming in for treatment one after another.
After Sally saw off a patient, someone suddenly barged in and called out, “Doctor, I’m so itchy! Please, you have to help me!”
