Chapter 5
My eyes stayed on the screen. My throat felt tight.
What was James doing?
When the baby died, he acted like it wasn’t a big deal. He said we could always have another one, as if it didn’t matter. Now. he looked so sad. It was hard to believe.
Thinking about the baby who had passed, my heart began to ache again. Just as I was about to turn off the monitor, I saw Wendy walk in. She stood at the door with a bowl of hangover soup in her hand.
“James, why did you drink so much again today? Mom and Dad are already asleep. You should drink this and go rest.”
“Put it down,” James spoke quietly, still leaning against the cradle without moving.
“What’s going on with you lately?”
Wendy put the bowl down and looked worried.
“Is Bianca angry at you again? Do you want me to go to the hospital tomorrow and talk to
her?”
James took a deep breath and turned around. While doing so, he knocked over the bowl of soup. Most of it spilled on Wendy’s hand and her skin turned red right away
She screamed from the pain, but James didn’t react. I raised my eyebrows, surprised. In the past, he would have rushed to help Wendy first, leaving everything else behind.
But now, he didn’t do anything. He even seemed a little impatient.
James frowned and spoke in a tired voice, “Wendy, don’t worry about this. Go back and get
some rest.”
“I’m not just talking about this soup. I’m talking about Bianca and me. You don’t need to get involved.”
“What do you mean?”
Wendy looked up, shocked.
“Do you think I caused problems between you and Bianca?”
His face looked tense. His eyes were no longer soft when he looked at her.
“Wendy, what you posted after the car accident and what you said to Bianca in the hospital
don’t you see that those things were like stabbing her in the heart?”
His voice wasn’t loud, but each word was clear.
Wendy’s face went pale. She tried to explain quickly.
“James, how could even you think that of me? I didn’t mean it like that, I-”
“You don’t have to explain. I just hope you won’t get involved in our relationship anymore.”
After that, he opened the door.
“And don’t come into the baby room again.”
