Lucas walked over, something twisting in his gut. He realized he hadn’t seen me after I went to the restroom last night. More importantly, he couldn’t sense my presence in the house. A sudden chill crawled up his spine.”
He took the box from Lilith and slowly lifted the lid. What he saw was like a punch to his chest.”
Inside were papers.
It was a document labeled in bold letters: Divorce. Even more shocking, his signature was on it. He didn’t remember signing anything… until a memory resurfaced where I was handing him documents to sign. He remembered that I said that it was important papers. He had assumed those were company documents.”
“Could it possibly be…” he muttered.}
His fingers trembled as he pushed the papers aside, revealing another document underneath, which is a hospital report. He skimmed through the basic details and stopped at the diagnosis section.”
Patient Name: Selene Montague}
Diagnosis: Miscarriage due to prolonged emotional stress and physical exhaustion.”
Lucas staggered back.
“Miscarriage? What does it mean?” He whispered, trying to understand the words he was reading. “Does it mean Selene was pregnant…“D
His mind went blank. He hadn’t known. How could he, when he had been too busy entertaining Lilith, almost taking my existence for granted? Just like me, he had longed for a child. That was why he once said that if I couldn’t give him an heir, he might as well find someone else.
But that had only been a joke. Lucas had never truly planned to abandon me. After all, I am his wife, his mate. Yet now, as he looked at the evidence, it seemed like he had made a grave mistake.”
“No,” he said under his breath, bolting toward the guest room, the room where I had stayed after Lilith took over mine.”
He pushed the door open. The room was empty. He rushed to the cabinets to check my belongings, but nothing remained. Aside from the lingering scent I had left behind, there was nothing.
Everything was gone.}
“Selene?” His voice cracked.}
Lilith lingered in the doorway. Her expression changed when she saw what Lucas held in his hands. Her jaw tightened for a split second before she softened her face into something that resembled sympathy.”
“Oh no,” she said, stepping forward. Her voice trembled, but her eyes stayed dry. “Does this mean she’s really leaving you? She… she lost the baby? How could that happen? Was she not taking good care of herself?“}
Lucas turned sharply and shoved her hand away. “Shut up. Selene is not leaving me.“”
She blinked, stunned. “Did you just push me?”
He didn’t answer. He was already dialing my number. Once. Twice. Three times. No answer. Each call went to voicemail.
“Selene, please pick up,” he muttered. “Please.“}
Lilith stepped back into the living room, watching him with narrowed eyes. She changed tactics again, her voice softer this time.”
“Maybe she just needed space,” she said. “She always goes on those little trips when she’s overwhelmed, right? She’ll come back. She always does.“}
Lucas stared at his phone. Maybe she was right. Maybe I just needed air. But the divorce papers and the hospital report said otherwise.”
His phone rang again. He answered it quickly, hoping it was me.
But it wasn’t.”
“Sir,” one of his subordinates said, “more investors are backing out. We need you at headquarters now.“}]
“I’m coming,” Lucas replied, stuffing the papers back into the box.
He turned on his heel and stormed out. Lilith tried to stop him, her voice sweet and pleading. “Lucas, wait-“}
But he didn’t even glance back. The front door slammed behind him.§
Left alone, Lilith stood in the quiet apartment. Her expression hardened. Her gaze dropped to the box on the floor. She walked toward it and stomped on it with her bare foot, crushing the corner.
“Selene,” she hissed through clenched teeth, “now that you’ve left… don’t you dare come back. Or I swear… I’ll make you regret it.“}
She bent down and picked up the hospital report again, scanning the words.”
A wicked smile curved her lips.”
